At present, it is the busiest airport in India. The airport also handles cargo alongside the air traffic.

Some constructions of the airport are underway. After the expansion, the airport will gain the capacity to handle around 100 million passengers. Annually.

However, the passenger services often get disruption. It is for the fog and smog. 

The airport made its third runway in 2008 with a cost of 10 billion rupees. And this runway owns the longest threshold displacements.

With the expansion of the runway, the airport can handle around 100 flights. In an hour. And it operates round the clock. The airport has three runways and they are near-parallel.

Background of Indira Gandhi International Airport:  

The first airport construction in India was in 1930. And that played the lead role for air traffic in India. For an increasing number of traffic, Palam Airport (built during the Second World War) started playing the role.

Later, Palam Airport got an extension during the 80s. And that is the Indira Gandhi International Airport now. The original terminals of Palam airport is handling international operations.

Numbers of domestic and international flights take off from this airport. Alongside the regular airlines, some low-cost domestic flights are available here.

However, there is separate arrangements for VVIP passengers. And the Indira Gandhi International Airport is under the authority of private consortia.

Indira Gandhi International Airport has both domestic and international flight operations. It has a smart cargo terminal under the joint operation of India and a Turkish company. For domestic destination, people fly to Mumbai more than any other places. 

And the airport can accommodate larger aircrafts like Boeing 731 and Airbus A31X.
