One of the most attractive places in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia is the house – Rumah Penghulu. It is a heritage in the city of Kuala Lumpur amid the modern establishments and sky touching buildings. Considering the architectural values of the house, it was placed in the heart of the Kuala Lumpur city to exhibit the traditional Malay houses. The Malay house belonged to Penghulu Abu Seman bin Nayan, a small village head in Kampung Sungai Kechil under the Kedah state and was initially built in 1916.
A few extensions and remodeling of the house were done in 1930. As a family tradition, the house was handed over to his son Ibrahim bin Abu Seman after the death of Penghulu. Consequently, after the death of Ibrahim (since he had no children), the house was unused and vacant for some years until the Heritage of Malaysia Trust bought it from the heir of Ibrahim. Disassembling the heritage house, it was then brought to Kuala Lumpur and was placed near Bukit Bintag area– another destination for the tourists in Kuala Lumpur.
The house has three major sections including – the balai hall, main house and dining room, and each of the sections were built in different times. The balai served as a meeting room for the Penghulu as he was the head of a village, the main house contains bed rooms and space for public events and the dining room was both used for dinning and cooking.
Since the heritage is located at the heart of Kuala Lumpur city, there are different accessible ways available at the Rumah Penghulu. The house is adjacent to Bukit Bintang area and you can reach there by walking. And form the other locations, you can ride on taxi or get on a monorail. Get down at the Bukit Bintang Station from the monorail, and you are there.
The house is a heritage of Kuala Lumpur, so you can have pictures as much as you can. Use the guided tour service to learn about the house more. If you ride on taxi to reach the house, ask the driver to turn on the meter and pay accordingly. Follow the rules and disciplines of the house during your visit.
The house is a heritage of Kuala Lumpur and remains open from Monday to Saturday. Guided tours are available from 11.00 am and 3.00 pm. Visitors donate at the donation box for the preservation of the house. Cultural and educational programmes, workshops and small events are held on demand inside the house. Every sections of the house are the reflection of the Malay craftsmanship. The interior and staircases of the house are made wonderfully.

Badan Warisan’s Heritage Centre is open from 10am -5pm (Monday – Saturday) and you can enter the grounds to look at Rumah Penghulu from the outside during those hours (free of charge).
