What to expect

Aegean Airlines is the flag carrier of Greece and the country's largest airline by passengers, destinations and fleet, based at Athens International Airport. It suits travellers flying to the Greek islands, around Greece, or between Greece and Europe, the Middle East and North Africa with a full-service airline. The company was founded on 2 January 1995 and began commercial flights in May 1999. It runs scheduled flights and some charter services. In 2025 it carried 17.3 million passengers.

Its head office sits at Athens International Airport, and Eftichios Vassilakis is chairman. The main hubs are Athens and Thessaloniki, with Larnaca in Cyprus also used as a hub. Secondary bases at Heraklion, Chania, Rhodes and Kalamata help on summer island routes. The network of about 118 destinations covers Greek domestic flights, cities across Europe, and destinations in the Middle East and North Africa.

Key facts for travellers:

  • Alliance: Star Alliance member since 30 June 2010, so you can earn and redeem miles with other Star Alliance airlines.
  • Fleet: 70 Airbus aircraft in July 2026: 24 A320-200s, 21 A320neos, 3 A321-200s and 22 A321neos, with 11 more A321neos on order. Six long-range A321LRs are due in 2027 and 2028 for routes to the Gulf, Central Africa and Asia, with India service planned around 2027.
  • Cabins: Economy and Business.
  • Loyalty programme: Miles+Bonus, with Blue, Silver and Gold tiers, which also covers Olympic Air flights.
  • Sister brand: Olympic Air still flies under its own name on many Greek domestic routes. The European Commission approved Aegean's purchase on 9 October 2013, after blocking an earlier merger attempt in January 2011.

Travel tip: Aegean sells several fare types, and the cheapest ones may not include a checked bag. Compare what each fare includes before you pay, and check in online so you only need the bag drop at the airport. If your trip connects to an Olympic Air flight, confirm the terminal and baggage rules for both legs on your booking.
