What to expect

Aerolineas Argentinas is the state-owned flag carrier and largest airline of Argentina, based in Buenos Aires, and it suits travellers crossing Argentina's long distances, from Patagonia to the far north, or flying between Argentina and South America, the Caribbean, North America and Europe. It was founded on 14 May 1949 by merging several state-backed carriers and began its own operations on 7 December 1950. In 2020 the regional airline Austral was merged into it. Fabián Lombardo has been president and chief executive since 2024.

The airline has two hubs in Buenos Aires: Aeroparque Jorge Newbery, close to the city centre, and Ministro Pistarini International Airport at Ezeiza. Córdoba and Rosario are focus cities. The network covers a large domestic market plus flights to other South American countries, the Caribbean, North America and Europe.

Key facts for travellers:

  • Alliance: SkyTeam member since August 2012, the first South American airline in the alliance and its 18th member.
  • Fleet: 83 aircraft in December 2025: 10 Airbus A330-200s with 272 seats for long-haul flights, 4 Boeing 737-700s, 28 737-800s, 15 737 MAX 8s and 24 Embraer 190s for regional routes, plus two 737-800 freighters. Airbus A330-900s are due from 2028, and more 737 MAX 8s and 737 MAX 10s are on order.
  • Cabins: Business and Economy, with a business cabin on the A330.
  • Loyalty programme: Aerolineas Plus.
  • Ownership: on 21 December 2023 President Javier Milei announced a decree to begin privatising the airline. Check current news for the status of the sale.

In November 2017 Aerolineas became the first Latin American airline to receive the Boeing 737 MAX 8, and its first commercial MAX flight ran from Buenos Aires Ezeiza to Mendoza.

Travel tip: Aerolineas Argentinas uses both Buenos Aires airports, which are far apart, so always check the departure airport on your ticket. Allow plenty of time if you connect between a domestic flight at Aeroparque and an international flight at Ezeiza, and check the baggage allowance for your fare, especially on domestic tickets.

Aerolíneas sets one allowance for short-haul and another for long-haul, and its premium cabins always carry more than the cheapest economy fare. Check the route-by-route figures on aerolineas.com.ar.

Pro tip: if you connect from a domestic flight at Aeroparque to an international one at Ezeiza, check whether your bags are tagged through. On separate tickets you collect them and cross the city.

Online Check-in

Aerolineas Argentinas flies from two Buenos Aires airports, so the first step is confirming which one your flight uses.

  1. Step 1

    Check in online

Online check-in for AR flights is on the official Aerolíneas website. You need the AR booking reference or e-ticket number and the passenger’s surname.

    Booking ref + surname
  2. Step 2

    Prepare your documents

Domestic flights in Argentina need accepted photo ID. For international routes carry your passport and any visa your destination requires.

    Passport · visa · ID
  3. Step 3

    Arrive early

Get to the airport with time for Aerolíneas check-in, bag drop and security. The airline sets a deadline for each airport, shown in your booking, and late arrivals can lose their seat.

    Check your deadline
  4. Step 4

    Drop your bags

Hand in checked luggage at the Aerolíneas counter or bag drop, then keep your boarding pass and passport ready for security and the gate.

Cheap tickets

Aerolineas fares depend on the season and the airport you fly from. These habits help.

  1. 01

    Be flexible with dates

Domestic fares to Patagonia and the north change by the day. Search the whole week before you book.

    Midweek flights
  2. 02

    Avoid peak holiday dates

January, February, Easter and the July winter holidays fill flights to Bariloche, Patagonia and the coast. Book those dates early.

    School holidays · festivals
  3. 03

    Compare fare types

Compare the domestic fare types on bags and changes before you choose the cheapest.

    Baggage & changes
  4. 04

    Check your Buenos Aires airport

Connections between Aeroparque and Ezeiza need a long road transfer. Leave plenty of time if your itinerary uses both.
