In short

Air Algérie is the flag carrier of Algeria, based at Houari Boumediene Airport in Algiers. It serves 80+ destinations, with over 30 domestic airports plus France, Europe, Africa, the Middle East, Canada and China. France is a busy market, making it a common choice for family visits between the two countries. No alliance; its scheme is Air Algérie Plus, and cabins are Business and Economy.

Air Algérie is the state-owned flag carrier of Algeria, founded in 1947 and based at Houari Boumediene Airport in Algiers. It has the largest market share on Algeria’s international routes, especially to France, and a domestic network reaching the Sahara.

What to expect

Air Algérie (IATA: AH, ICAO: DAH) is the state-owned flag carrier of Algeria, with its head office in the El-Djazair building in Algiers and its hub at Houari Boumediene Airport (ALG). It is the airline most travellers use for flights inside Algeria and for the busy routes between Algeria and France, and it also flies to Spain, other European cities, Africa, the Middle East, Montreal and Beijing.

From CGTA to national airline

The company was founded on 15 March 1947 as Compagnie Générale de Transports Aériens (CGTA). It merged with Compagnie Air Transport in 1953 to form Air Algérie, and the Algerian government took full ownership in 1972. The state still owns 100% of the airline. Related businesses for cargo, catering, maintenance, ground handling and a tour operator sit inside the same group.

Where it flies

Algiers is the main hub, and Oran Es Sénia Airport is a focus city with its own international departures. As of October 2026 the airline served 33 domestic airports and 44 international destinations. Domestic flights matter a great deal in a country of Algeria's size: they connect the coast with Saharan cities such as Tamanrasset, Djanet, Adrar, Ghardaïa, Timimoun and Tindouf, where the alternative is a very long drive. France has more Air Algérie routes than any other foreign country, with flights to Paris, Marseille, Lyon, Nice, Toulouse, Bordeaux, Lille, Strasbourg, Nantes, Montpellier and other French airports. A Berlin service was scheduled to start on 14 September 2026.

High fares during French school holidays

Fares between France and Algeria climb sharply during school holidays and festive periods, when many families travel at the same time. Book early for those dates. Passport control and security at Algiers can take a long time, so arrive at the airport well before the check-in deadline shown on your booking.
