What to expect

Air Calédonie (IATA: TY, ICAO: TPC) is the domestic airline of New Caledonia, the French territory in the South Pacific. It flies ATR 72-600 turboprops from Nouméa Magenta Airport to the Loyalty Islands and to towns in the north of Grande Terre, and it is the airline visitors and residents use to reach Lifou, Maré and Ouvéa by air.

New Caledonia's first airline

The company began on 9 December 1954 as Transpac, the first airline in New Caledonia, and took the name Air Calédonie in 1961. Its formal name is Société Calédonienne de Transports Aériens. From 1968 the fleet moved to turboprops, and earlier fleets included ATR 42-300s, ATR 42-500s and ATR 72-500s.

Who owns it

Ownership is almost entirely public. The Government of New Caledonia holds 52.45%, the Loyalty Islands Province 26.21%, the North Province 14.55% and the South Province 5.16%. Private investors hold 1.10% and Air France 0.53%.

Flights to the Loyalty Islands and the north

Most flights start at Nouméa Magenta, the capital's domestic airport. The Loyalty Islands routes go to Lifou, Maré, Ouvéa and Tiga. North Province flights serve Koné, Koumac and Touho, and Belep in the far north. Some published records list the Isle of Pines route as ended, but the airline's own booking form in November 2026 offers the Île des Pins, Nouméa La Tontouta and Port Vila in Vanuatu, so check the live timetable for your dates.

Growth in passenger numbers

Air Calédonie carried about 100,000 passengers in 1980 and 300,000 by the end of 2000. Between March 2013 and March 2014 it carried 400,000.

Booking early, no loyalty scheme or alliance

Island flights are popular in holiday periods, so book early. Air Calédonie has no frequent flyer programme and is not part of an alliance.

Online Check-in

Air Calédonie check-in comes down to four steps, from checking in online to dropping your bags at Nouméa Magenta Airport. Online check-in opens 30 hours before departure and closes 40 minutes before the flight. Most long-haul flights into New Caledonia land at La Tontouta, while most Air Calédonie domestic flights use Magenta in the city, so check which airport your island flight leaves from and allow road time between the two if you arrive from abroad the same day.

  1. Step 1

    Check in online

Where your flight allows it, check in on air-caledonie.nc with your surname and booking reference or e-ticket number.

    Booking ref + surname
  2. Step 2

    Prepare your documents

Pack your passport plus any visa, residence permit or entry papers your destination asks for. Domestic TY passengers should bring a photo ID the airline accepts.

  3. Step 3

    Arrive early

Air Calédonie closes its check-in counters before departure, and passengers who miss the cut-off can be refused boarding. Leave room for bag drop and security at GEA.

    Check your deadline
  4. Step 4

    Drop your bags

Air Calédonie desks and bag-drop points take your hold luggage. Keep the bag-tag receipt with your boarding pass until the bags come off at the end of your TY trip.

Cheap tickets

How to find a cheaper Air Calédonie fare without giving up the bag or seat you need.

  1. 01

    Try midweek TY flights

If your dates can move, look at TY flights across the whole week. Midweek seats are often cheaper than weekend ones.

  2. 02

    Steer clear of peak weeks

When school holidays and festivals send many people travelling at once, TY fares rise. A trip just before or after the peak tends to cost less.

  3. 03

Check what each Air Calédonie fare includes

The lowest TY fare is not always the cheapest trip once bags and seats are added. Compare the fare types before you pay.

  4. 04

    Mind the two Nouméa airports

Domestic flights leave from Magenta (GEA); international flights use La Tontouta (NOU), a separate airport some distance away. Plan your transfer time.

    Compare nearby airports

Cities with two or more airports can give quite different fares. Check each one before settling on an Air Calédonie flight.
