What to expect

Air Mozambique (IATA TM), known until August 2026 as LAM Mozambique Airlines, is the state-owned flag carrier of Mozambique. It is based at Maputo International Airport with Beira as a focus city, and flies about nine domestic routes linking Maputo with cities across the country plus a few regional routes in Southern Africa. For most travellers it is the practical way to cover Mozambique's long distances.

From DETA to LAM

The airline began on 26 August 1936 as DETA, a division of the Portuguese colonial railways, harbours and airways department, and regular airmail flights started on 22 December 1937. After independence it was restructured and renamed LAM, Linhas Aéreas de Moçambique, in 1980. It became a limited company on 23 December 1998 under the name LAM Mozambique Airlines, and it joined the African Airlines Association in 1976.

A new name

The carrier has lost money for many years and has been short of aircraft, leasing planes to fill gaps. Américo Muchanga became chief executive on 10 July 2024. After testing a new brand in June 2026, the airline took the name Air Mozambique on 14 August 2026.

Government and employee shareholders

The Government of Mozambique held about 91 per cent of the shares as of August 2014, with employees owning the rest. A subsidiary, Moçambique Expresso, is wholly owned by the airline.

Domestic and regional routes

As of February 2021 the airline flew nine domestic and three regional routes, around 12 destinations in all. Domestic flights link Maputo, in the far south, with Beira and cities further north. It codeshares with Ethiopian Airlines, fastjet, Kenya Airways, South African Airways, TAAG Angola Airlines and TAP Air Portugal, which helps with onward travel to Europe and the rest of Africa. It is not in a global alliance.

Confirming flights a day before travel

With only a handful of aircraft, Air Mozambique schedules can change at short notice. Confirm your flight on the airline's website a day before departure and leave extra time between connections.
