What to expect

Air Seychelles (IATA: HM, ICAO: SEY) is the national airline of the Seychelles, based at Seychelles International Airport on Mahé. It runs inter-island flights from Mahé to Praslin on Twin Otter aircraft and regional international routes on Airbus A320neos to cities such as Johannesburg, Mumbai, Colombo, Abu Dhabi and Tel Aviv, and it suits visitors combining an international arrival with a hop to Praslin.

The 1977 merger that created Air Seychelles

Air Seychelles was formed on 15 September 1977 by merging two local carriers, Air Mahé and Inter-Island Airways, and took its present name in 1978. It began as a government-owned airline. In 2012 Etihad Airways bought a 40% stake for US$45 million, which brought codeshares, flights to Abu Dhabi from March 2012 and Airbus A330-200 wide-bodies. The airline reported a net profit of US$3.2 million for 2014.

Back to a regional airline

In January 2018 Air Seychelles closed its long-haul route to Paris, handed back its two A330s and refocused on regional and domestic flying. The government bought back Etihad's 40% stake in May 2021, returning the airline to full state ownership, and Air Seychelles reported a profit of US$8.4 million for 2022.

Twelve destinations and the Mahé to Praslin link

Published records list twelve destinations. The domestic service links Mahé and Praslin, and several outer islands are served by charter only. International flights connect Mahé with Johannesburg, Mumbai, Colombo, Mauritius, Abu Dhabi and Tel Aviv. Codeshare agreements with Air India, Emirates, South African Airways, SriLankan Airlines, Turkish Airlines and Air Botswana let travellers book onward connections on one ticket.

Pro tip: if you fly on to Praslin after an international arrival, check that leg's allowance before you leave home.

Check what each Air Seychelles fare includes

The lowest HM fare is not always the cheapest trip once bags and seats are added. Compare the fare types before you pay.

  4. 04

    Book Praslin hops early

Inter-island Twin Otters carry few passengers and have tight baggage limits, so book early and pack light.
