What to expect

Air Transat (IATA: TS, ICAO: TSC) is a Canadian leisure airline headquartered in Montreal and owned by Transat A.T. Inc. From hubs at Montréal–Trudeau and Toronto Pearson, plus Québec City and Ottawa, it flies to about 65 destinations in 35 countries, mainly in Europe, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central America, and suits Canadians heading on holiday or visiting family in Europe.

Founding in 1986 and the first Acapulco flight

Air Transat was founded in December 1986 and flew its first flight on 14 November 1987, from Montreal to Acapulco. The airline carried about 5.4 million passengers in 2025.

The Air Canada deal that failed

In 2019 Air Canada agreed to buy Transat A.T. During the pandemic the offer was cut from C$18 to C$5 per share, and the deal ended in April 2021 after the European Commission did not approve it. Transat has stayed independent since then.

The 2001 Azores landing of Flight 236

In 2001 Air Transat Flight 236, an Airbus A330, ran out of fuel over the Atlantic. The crew landed it safely in the Azores, and all 306 people on board survived.

Cuba and US suspensions in 2026

In February 2026 Air Transat suspended its flights to Cuba and the United States. The remaining network covers Europe and sun destinations such as Mexico and the Caribbean, with Québec City and Ottawa as focus cities alongside the two hubs. In November 2023 Air Transat and Porter Airlines formed a joint venture that links the two airlines' networks.
