Amangalla is a five-star Aman hotel of 29 rooms and suites at 10 Church Street inside Galle Fort, the 17th-century fortified old town on Sri Lanka's south coast and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The building has taken guests for more than 150 years and opened under Aman in 2004. Couples and travellers who want to stay inside the walls of the fort choose it.
The suites keep their high ceilings, original wooden floors, tall sash windows and four-poster beds. One side of the house looks over the fort and the harbour, the other over the gardens and pool. Bedrooms and chambers fill the main house, and suites and the Garden House sit in the gardens behind it. Rooms are non-smoking, with a king bed or twin beds, a bathroom with a bathtub and separate shower, a minibar and free Wi-Fi. Extra beds cannot be added to any room. Cot availability depends on the room, and babysitting is available for a charge.
The Dining Room, with white linen and chandeliers, serves international dishes from breakfast to dinner. It opens onto the Veranda above Church Street, where high tea is served. Breakfast is à la carte with Western and continental choices. There is also a bar, a tea room and room service.
The garden holds a swimming pool, a tennis court and a library. The Aman Spa has hydrotherapy suites and a sauna, and there is a fitness room. A three-night Ayurveda retreat combines tailored meals, treatments and yoga.
The National Museum Galle and the Dutch Reformed Church are each about 100 m away, and the National Maritime Museum about 110 m. Galle railway station is about 400 m outside the walls. Koggala Airport is about 15 km away; seaplanes fly daily from Colombo to Koggala, followed by a drive of about 25 minutes. A helicopter flight to Galle takes about an hour. Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) is about 158 km by road, about two hours by car. Airport transfers can be booked for a fee.
Aman pairs the hotel with Amanwella, its beach resort at Tangalle further along the coast, in a "Fort and Beach" journey of two or more nights at each. Galle Lighthouse is close by inside the fort.
