What to expect

Bahamasair is the national airline of The Bahamas, owned by the Bahamian Government and based at Lynden Pindling International Airport in Nassau. It suits travellers hopping between the islands of The Bahamas and those flying between Nassau, Florida and nearby Caribbean islands. It has been flying since 17 June 1973.

How the network is laid out

Almost every Bahamasair route touches Nassau. From there the airline flies to the Out Islands, including Freeport on Grand Bahama, Marsh Harbour in the Abacos, Exuma, Governor's Harbour, Rock Sound and North Eleuthera, and remote islands such as Mayaguana and Inagua. For travellers this makes it a practical way to island-hop without chartering a plane.

International flights reach Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Orlando and West Palm Beach in Florida, Havana in Cuba, Providenciales in the Turks and Caicos and Cap-Haïtien in Haiti. Sources give between 20 and 32 destinations, as the count changes with seasonal routes.

The 1973 founding from Flamingo and Out Island

Bahamasair was formed in 1973 by taking over the routes of Flamingo Airlines and the operations of Out Island Airways. In 1991 it replaced its jets with Dash 8 turboprops, then returned to jets for longer routes with the Boeing 737. Tracy Cooper is the managing director.

Partners and connections

Bahamasair is not in a global alliance. It has a codeshare with Alaska Airlines and interline agreements with Condor and Hahn Air. An interline ticket lets you check bags through from a partner's flight to a Bahamasair island flight, which is useful when your long-haul trip ends in Nassau and the holiday starts on an Out Island.

Connecting in Nassau

Arriving from the United States, you clear Bahamian immigration and customs in Nassau before the domestic flight, unless you hold a through ticket that says otherwise. Plan a generous connection, because island flights can be affected by weather and aircraft rotations.

Fleet and aircraft

Bahamasair has ten aircraft. Four Boeing 737-700s with 138 seats fly the Florida and Caribbean routes and the busiest island sectors. Three ATR 72-600s with 70 seats and three ATR 42-600s with 50 seats fly the shorter island hops. The ATRs were ordered in 2015 to replace the Dash 8 turboprops the airline had used since 1991. On the ATRs overhead bins are small, and larger cabin bags may be taken at the steps and returned on arrival. Pack valuables and medicines in a bag that fits under the seat.

Expect the allowance on Bahamasair to change with distance and cabin: higher cabins include more than basic economy on the same flight. Look up your route on the baggage page of bahamasair.com.

Bahamasair offers web check-in on bahamasair.com. Baggage allowance depends on the route and fare, and smaller turboprop flights can have weight limits that affect how much you can bring. Check your allowance on the airline's website before you pack.

Pro tip: weigh your bags at home before leaving for the airport; extra weight on Bahamasair usually costs more at the counter than when you add it online.

Cheap tickets

Ways to pay less for a Bahamasair ticket, from the dates you choose to the fare type you buy.

  1. 01

    Look across the week

If your dates can move, look at UP flights across the whole week. Midweek seats are often cheaper than weekend ones.

  2. 02

    Travel around the busy dates

When school holidays and festivals send many people travelling at once, UP fares rise. A trip just before or after the peak tends to cost less.

  3. 03

Price the bundle, not the base fare

Look at the next Bahamasair fare up: if it bundles a hold bag or easier changes, it may beat the basic fare plus extras.
