What to expect

Boliviana de Aviación, known as BoA, is the state-owned flag carrier and largest airline of Bolivia, headquartered in Cochabamba with its main hub at Jorge Wilstermann International Airport. It suits travellers moving between La Paz, Santa Cruz, Cochabamba and other Bolivian cities, and those flying from Bolivia to neighbouring countries, Miami and Madrid. The government created it on 24 October 2007 by Supreme Decree 29318, and it began flying in March 2009.

How BoA became the main airline in Bolivia

BoA was set up after the long decline of Lloyd Aéreo Boliviano, the old national airline, left gaps in the domestic market. It started with two Boeing 737-300s in 2009. When the private airline AeroSur collapsed in 2011 and 2012, BoA took over most domestic traffic and became the country's main carrier. It joined IATA in November 2014.

Hubs: Cochabamba, La Paz and Santa Cruz

Cochabamba is the main hub, in the middle of the country. El Alto International Airport, which serves La Paz, and Viru Viru International Airport in Santa Cruz de la Sierra are focus cities. Long-haul and most international flights use Viru Viru, because La Paz's high altitude limits heavily loaded aircraft. If you start in La Paz and fly abroad, expect a connection in Santa Cruz.

Where BoA flies

The network covers about 21 destinations in eight countries in the Americas, plus Madrid in Spain. Domestic routes link the main Bolivian cities. International routes include Buenos Aires, São Paulo, Asunción, Lima, Caracas and Miami, and Madrid is served from Viru Viru. A route to Havana opened in October 2023 and was suspended in July 2024 because of low demand and high costs.

Partners and Elévate

BoA is not in a global alliance. It codeshares with Aerolíneas Argentinas, Avianca and Iberia, and has interline agreements with Emirates and Hahn Air. The Iberia codeshare is useful on the Madrid route for connections into Europe.

The loyalty programme is Elévate. Add your membership number to your booking so flights earn points.

Altitude and other practical tips

El Alto, which serves La Paz, is one of the highest international airports in the world, so plan for the altitude on arrival. Domestic and international tickets can carry different baggage allowances, so check yours on boa.bo before you fly, especially if a domestic connection is booked separately from a long-haul flight.

Business and Economy on Airbus A330 long-haul flights; Boeing 737s on domestic and regional routes. BoA sells Business and Economy. The A330-200s have lie-flat Business seats and in-seat entertainment throughout the cabin, so the long-haul product is a step up from the domestic one. The 737 fleet is being refitted with new seats, so the cabin you get on a domestic flight depends on whether your aircraft has been updated.

No global alliance

BoA is not in Star Alliance, oneworld or SkyTeam, so status from an alliance airline does not carry over to its flights.

BoA sets one allowance for short-haul and another for long-haul, and its premium cabins always carry more than the cheapest economy fare. Check the route-by-route figures on boa.bo.

Pro tip: if your OB fare comes without a hold bag, buy one in your booking before you fly; airport prices for extra bags are usually higher.
