Regional Anatolian home dishes rarely found elsewhere in Istanbul, in the Kadıköy market streets on the Asian side, opened in 1998 by Musa Dağdeviren. Budget prices and outdoor seating make it a favourite for curious eaters.
Çiya Sofrası is a regional Anatolian restaurant at Güneşli Bahçe Sokak 43 in the Kadıköy market streets, on Istanbul's Asian side. Opened in 1998 and linked to cook and researcher Musa Dağdeviren, it suits curious eaters on a budget who want Turkish home dishes rarely served elsewhere in the city.
Dağdeviren is often described as a culinary anthropologist for his work recording forgotten regional recipes, and the menu reflects it. Dishes change daily with the seasons and with what producers across Anatolia send in: unusual vegetable preparations, rare stews, and meat cooked with fruit, spiced the way each region does it. Lamb with quince, served when quinces are in season, is the best-known dish. Salads, soups, rice dishes, kebabs and regional desserts complete the spread.
Hot dishes are chosen at the counter, where staff explain what is in each tray that day. The self-service meze bar is paid by weight. A 2026 listing put the average spend at about US$10 per person. The room is simple, with tiled floors and quick service, and there is outdoor seating; food can also be taken away.
The public ferry from Eminönü or Karaköy reaches Kadıköy in about 20 minutes, then it is a five-minute walk into the market. Two other Çiya venues, the kebab houses, sit a few metres away on the same streets.
