Fairmont Peace Hotel is a five-star hotel at 20 Nanjing Road East, on the corner of the Bund in Shanghai's Huangpu District. Victor Sassoon built it as the Cathay Hotel, and it is one of the city's best-known landmarks. It suits travellers who want the Bund waterfront and Nanjing Road at the door, history buffs and jazz fans.
The hotel has been part of Shanghai's story for close to a century. Sir Victor Sassoon built Sassoon House between 1926 and 1929 and opened the Cathay Hotel inside it, living himself in the 10th-floor penthouse that is now the Sassoon Presidential Suite. The green pyramid roof is copper that has weathered over time. Across Nanjing Road, the older Palace Hotel of 1908 is now the Swatch Art Peace Hotel. After a renovation that began in 2007, the north building reopened in 2010 as Fairmont Peace Hotel. The Old Jazz Band inspired the film As Time Goes By. A small Peace Museum inside the building traces this history.
A renovation was announced in May 2025, and the hotel is due to become Raffles Peace Hotel Shanghai in 2027. Check the brand and booking channel before you reserve stays from 2027.
East Nanjing Road metro station is about 500 m away and Tiantong Road station about 1.2 km. Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG) is about 45 to 53 km away, roughly 50 minutes by road, and Hongqiao Airport is closer. About 20 indoor parking spaces are available.
There are around 270 rooms, including some 39 suites. Fairmont King and Twin rooms and Deluxe rooms make up most of them. Fairmont Gold rooms include lounge access. River-view suites look over the Huangpu, and themed suites of about 178 m² are decorated in Chinese, American, English and Italian styles. The Sassoon Presidential Suite is a 268 m² penthouse on the 10th floor.
The Cathay Room on the 9th floor serves French food, afternoon tea and Sunday brunch, with a terrace over the river. Dragon Phoenix on the 8th floor serves Shanghainese and other Chinese dishes with views of the Bund and Lujiazui. The Jazz Bar is known for nightly sets by its Old Jazz Band. Breakfast is a buffet with Western, Chinese and Asian dishes.
The hotel has an indoor heated pool, a spa and a fitness centre.
