In short

Fiji Airways is the national airline of Fiji, based at Nadi International. It flies to Pacific islands, Australia, New Zealand, North America and Asia, which makes Nadi a stopover point across the Pacific. Fiji Airways is a oneworld member, and points are earned through AAdvantage. Cabins are Business and Economy, and cabin baggage depends on the fare.

Fiji Airways, called Air Pacific until 2013, is Fiji’s national airline and the main way most visitors reach the islands.

What to expect

Fiji Airways (IATA FJ, ICAO FJI) is the national airline of Fiji, based at Nadi International Airport on the main island of Viti Levu. It carries most international visitors to Fiji and suits travellers heading to the islands from Australia, New Zealand, North America and parts of Asia, plus anyone crossing the Pacific who wants a few nights in Fiji on the way.

From Katafaga Estates in 1947 to Fiji Airways

Fiji Airways began in 1947, when the Australian aviator Harold Gatty registered a company called Katafaga Estates. It took the Fiji Airways name in September 1951 and flew its first commercial service that month with a de Havilland Dragon Rapide. Qantas bought the company after Gatty died in 1958, and after Fiji's independence in 1970 the airline was renamed Air Pacific. It returned to the Fiji Airways name on 27 June 2013, a rebrand that came with new uniforms and the arrival of Airbus A330s.

The first international service, to Brisbane, started on 1 June 1973, and a Honolulu route followed in 1983 as the first step towards the United States. Today the Government of Fiji owns 50 per cent of the company and the Fiji National Provident Fund holds 30 per cent. Qantas keeps 16 per cent and Air New Zealand 4 per cent. The wider Air Pacific Group also has a stake in the Sofitel Fiji Resort and Spa on Denarau Island.

Hubs and where Fiji Airways flies

Nadi International Airport (NAN) is the hub, and Nausori International Airport (SUV), which serves the capital Suva, is the secondary base. Wikipedia counts 28 destinations as of January 2026, and the oneworld website lists 25 destinations in 14 countries and territories. The network reaches Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne and Adelaide in Australia, Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch in New Zealand, and Los Angeles, San Francisco, Honolulu, Vancouver and Dallas/Fort Worth across the Pacific. In Asia it flies to Hong Kong, Singapore and Tokyo Narita.

Codeshare agreements with Qantas, American Airlines, Alaska Airlines, Cathay Pacific and Singapore Airlines extend this to more than 100 further cities on one ticket. Nadi sits roughly halfway between Australia and the west coast of North America, so a ticket from Sydney or Auckland to Los Angeles on Fiji Airways connects there, and many travellers add a stopover in Fiji at no great extra cost.

Fiji Link and the outer islands

Fiji Link is the regional arm, known as Pacific Sun until it was rebranded in June 2014. It flies domestic routes from Nadi and Suva to Fiji's smaller islands, plus short regional services to Tonga, Samoa, Tuvalu and Vanuatu. Its fleet is small: two ATR 72-600s, one ATR 42-600 and three DHC-6 Twin Otters as of July 2026. Island airstrips and small aircraft mean tighter weight limits, so check the Fiji Link allowance separately if your trip continues beyond Nadi.

Baggage rules on Pacific and long-haul routes

Baggage allowances depend on the route, cabin and fare. Flights to North America, Australia and New Zealand, and the Pacific islands follow different rules, and the exact allowance is printed on your e-ticket. Surf and dive gear counts as sporting equipment and should be booked in advance. Check-in opens online on the Fiji Airways website and app for eligible flights, and you need your booking reference and surname.

Australian and New Zealand school holidays are the busiest times, when flights to Nadi fill early. Midweek departures cost less on many routes. Fiji Airways flight numbers start with FJ, for example FJ 910, and you can track a flight with that number on the airline's website or the airport departures board.

Travel tip: if you are flying between Australia or New Zealand and North America, price the trip with a stopover in Nadi. The connection is already there, and a few days on the islands turns one very long journey into two shorter ones.

Fleet and aircraft

Fiji Airways had 14 mainline jets in July 2026: four Airbus A350-900s, three A330-200s, one A330-300, five Boeing 737 MAX 8s and one 737-800. The A350s carry 334 passengers, with 33 seats in Business and 301 in Economy, and fly the long routes to North America and Asia. The A330s cover long-haul and the busiest Australian routes, and the 737s fly to New Zealand, eastern Australia and the Pacific islands. There are two cabins. Business Class on the A350 has seats that convert to fully flat beds, which matters on long overnight flights to Los Angeles or Vancouver. Business passengers also get priority check-in, extra baggage and lounge access where available. Economy includes meals and drinks on international flights and seatback entertainment on the wide-body aircraft. The airline added free messaging WiFi on equipped aircraft in late 2024, so check your aircraft type when you book.

AAdvantage

Since April 2025 Fiji Airways uses American Airlines’ AAdvantage programme.

Fiji Airways flights earn AAdvantage miles and status credit, and as a oneworld member you can also credit flights to other oneworld programmes such as Qantas Frequent Flyer. Pick the programme you use most.

Fiji Airways joined oneworld as a Connect member in December 2018 and became a full member on 1 April 2025. On the same date it moved its frequent flyer scheme to American Airlines AAdvantage. Add an AAdvantage number to the booking and miles and status credit post automatically. You can also credit flights to another oneworld programme such as Qantas Frequent Flyer, and elite cardholders get oneworld lounge access and priority services across the alliance.
