Galle Face Hotel is a five-star, roughly 156-room seafront hotel at 2 Galle Road, Colombo 03, at the southern end of Galle Face Green in Sri Lanka's capital. The hotel has been receiving guests for more than 160 years and calls itself one of the oldest hotels east of Suez. It was renovated in 2015 and keeps its colonial look, with a lawn that runs down to the Indian Ocean. Business travellers and visitors who want a sunset view and a central base stay here.
Rooms look over the garden, the city or the sea. At the top of the range, the three-bedroom Empress Suite is described by the hotel as possibly the largest hotel suite in Sri Lanka, and the King Emperor Suite covers more than 200 m² on the top floor. Royal guests from Thailand, Scandinavia, the Netherlands and the UK have stayed in the Royal Suites. Each is non-smoking, with air conditioning, a minibar, a refrigerator, a flat-screen TV, a safe and a desk. Bathrooms have a shower and tub, free toiletries and bathrobes. Wired and wireless internet are free.
Fees may apply for children using existing beds, and extra bed and crib rules depend on the room.
The hotel has seven restaurants and three bars and lounges. 1864 Limited Edition is the fine-dining restaurant. The Verandah, facing the sea, has served authors, generals and travellers for well over a century. Firebeach, King of the Mambo, Travellers' Bar and In…On the Green are the other restaurants and bars, and there is a poolside bar and a wine cellar. Room service runs 24 hours. The buffet breakfast is served from 7:00 AM to 10:30 AM, and costs about USD 15 per adult and USD 7.50 for children aged 17 and under when not included.
The saltwater outdoor pool faces the ocean. A spa, a sauna and a free gym complete the leisure side, and guests have private beach access.
The Galle Face roundabout is about 110 m away, St. Andrew's Scots Kirk about 220 m and Galle Face Green itself about 240 m. The Dutch Hospital shopping precinct is about 1.9 km and Colombo City Centre about 2 km. Kompannavidiya railway station is about 700 m away and Slave Island station about 730 m. Airport transfers can be booked for a fee.
A fixed deposit of USD 100 is charged at check-in. Parking and valet parking are free, with no booking needed. Check-in is after 2:00 PM and check-out is before 12:00 PM, with a 24-hour front desk. Pets are not allowed.
The Jubilee Ballroom, once a nightclub, is the only octagonal ballroom without pillars in Colombo, and the black-and-white Chequerboard terrace was laid to mark Queen Victoria's Jubilee. The hotel won Best Heritage Hotel at the 2024 Sri Lanka Tourism Awards, and Condé Nast Traveller readers ranked it first in the rest of Asia in their 2024 Readers' Choice Awards.
