Hotel Santa Caterina is a five-star, family-run hotel on the cliffs of the Amalfi Coast road, about 700 m from the centre of Amalfi, Italy. Gardens, terraces and lemon groves step down to the sea, and it suits couples and families who want a seasonal sea-view stay with a private beach club and easy access to Amalfi town.
Dr Giuseppe Gambardella opened the hotel in 1904 with six rooms, and his descendants still run it. Today there are 66 rooms and suites in the main building and 12 more in Casa Marchesa, a historic residence among the lemon trees. Rooms have hand-painted Vietri majolica floors, marble bathrooms and balconies over the sea or the gardens. Categories run from Partial Sea View and Front Sea View doubles to Junior Suites with living areas and large bathtubs, Suites with garden access and two special suites. Connecting rooms are available for families.
The Beach Club is open to hotel guests only, from mid-April to October. It has a saltwater pool on a cliffside deck with direct access to the sea, sun beds, umbrellas and towels, a beach bar and Restaurant Al Mare for Mediterranean lunches. Glicine is the fine dining restaurant, cooking with seasonal Amalfi produce. The rooftop Senzafine, The Grottino terrace restaurant, a wine cellar and Bar La Terrazza for aperitifs complete the choice. Breakfast is continental.
The gym looks out to sea, and the spa menu covers face and body treatments, including a signature lemon massage. Parking on site is free, which is unusual on this stretch of coast where most hotels charge.
A free shuttle runs to Amalfi town and the ferry port, and private boats can drop guests at the hotel's own jetty. Naples International Airport (NAP) is about 66 km by road, Salerno railway station about 25 km and Napoli Centrale about 70 km. The hotel closes for the winter season, listed from 9 November to 1 March. Accessible rooms are not yet fully compliant, and the Beach Club deck and pool are not fully accessible, though staff will help. Pets are not accepted.
Besides the main building, rooms are spread over two villas, and three honeymoon cottages stand among the lemon and orange groves. The best known is Chalet Giulietta & Romeo, a small two-level cottage above the water. A lift runs down the cliff to the Beach Club, and guests who prefer to walk can follow paths down through the terraced gardens and citrus orchards.
