Just for Laughs Comedy Festival, Montreal guide
Comedy fans and anyone curious about the industry's next names will find galas, club sets and free outdoor shows in English and French. Just for Laughs usually runs for about twelve days in the second half of July in the downtown entertainment district. July is Montreal's fullest month, so book a walkable room before the line-up is out.
Just for Laughs, Juste pour rire in French, is Montreal's summer comedy festival and the place where the comedy industry comes to look for its next stars. For about twelve days, stand-up sets, televised galas and free outdoor shows fill the downtown entertainment district, in English and in French.
It mixes household names with comics nobody has heard of yet, and plenty of today's headliners were once in the second group. Even the free shows on the square can feature acts that sell out arenas elsewhere.
It came close to disappearing a few years ago. That it is back, and as busy as ever, says something about how much the city and the comedy world wanted it.

Hotels near the venue fill up around the event dates.
The festival site has firm rules, and staff do ask people to leave for unruly or dangerous behaviour.
Shows run in English or in French, and the poster does not always make it obvious. Check the language on the listing before buying a ticket, especially for galas and club nights, which are usually in one language only. Non-verbal acts, the acrobats and mime, work for everyone.
The free headliners on the outdoor stage draw very large crowds. If you want to see the performer in person, get to Place des Festivals well before the start, eat beforehand, and agree a meeting point with friends in case you get separated.
Many visa-exempt travellers still need an electronic travel authorisation, the eTA, to board a flight to Canada. Apply before you buy your plane ticket.
The stage on Place des Festivals runs through the evening with free sets and the odd big name; in 2026 "Weird Al" Yankovic played a free concert there.
Hosted shows with a run of comics, filmed for television in Théâtre Maisonneuve. Gabriel Iglesias, Gerry Dee, Atsuko Okatsuka and Mike Birbiglia all hosted or appeared in 2026.
One star, one night: Jerry Seinfeld did two in 2026.
Emerging stand-ups and character comics play in front of the industry scouts.
Themed nights in the smaller rooms, such as Brit(ish) and The Culture Show in 2026. The club rooms keep later hours than the galas, so check start times.
Book a bed before you think about shows. July is the fullest month in Montreal's festival year, and rooms within walking distance of the Quartier des Spectacles go early. The 2027 dates are already fixed, so there is no reason to wait for the line-up before reserving somewhere you can cancel.
Location matters more than the room itself. The streets around Place des Arts and the Latin Quarter put nearly every venue within a short walk, which counts at midnight when the last club show lets out. Further out, pick a hotel near a metro station on the green line.
Then build the days around a few tickets. Most people choose one or two paid evening shows, a gala or a headliner, and fill the gaps with free outdoor sets and a late club night. Leave at least one evening open for a show friends recommend once you are there. Our Canada travel guide helps if you want to add Quebec City or the coast before or after.
Gilbert Rozon launched Juste pour rire in 1983 as a French-language event lasting two days. Andy Nulman added English shows in 1985, and the festival stretched to a full month, with French acts in the first half and English acts in the second. Acrobats and mime catered for anyone who spoke neither language. Victor, the little green monster drawn by Vittorio Fiorucci, became its mascot and still turns up all over the site. Many people outside Canada know the brand only from the hidden-camera series with no dialogue, Just for Laughs Gags.
Montreal has long been where comedy careers get noticed. Kevin Hart played here before he was famous. So did Dave Chappelle and Amy Schumer, and the scouts at New Faces are still hunting for the next ones.
The 2024 festival did not go ahead. ComediHa!, a Quebec producer, bought the brand in May 2024 and brought the festival back in 2025. By 2026 it was running at scale again, drawing upwards of 1,200 performers and industry people to about 25 venues.
Montréal-Trudeau International Airport is the gateway for Canadian, US and transatlantic flights.
STM bus 747 runs around the clock to downtown in 45 to 70 minutes, depending on traffic. The fare doubles as a 24-hour transit pass, but on board it is coins only, so buy it before boarding or carry change. Taxis are quicker and cost more.
Place-des-Arts metro station, on the green line, drops you in the middle of the venues.
Streets around the site close for the run, so leave the car behind and walk between venues.
July is Montreal's warmest month. Average highs are about 27°C and lows about 17°C, and the month brings about 90 mm of rain, often in short thunderstorms (1991-2020 normals at Trudeau airport).
Warm, humid evenings are typical for the outdoor shows, while the air-conditioned halls can feel cold.

General
The pranks themselves are real, played on members of the public who do not know they are being filmed. Some film trickery is used to capture reactions, but the people caught out are not actors, which is much of the charm.
No. The museum, which opened in 1993 as a space for exhibitions and events devoted to humour, closed on 1 January 2011. The festival itself carries the brand in the city now.
The brand has spun off festivals elsewhere over the years, notably in Toronto and Chicago, along with television shows. Montreal is the original, and it is still where New Faces and the televised galas take place.
Comedia was a comedy film component the festival added in 1996, awarding prizes to feature-length and short comedies. It gave Just for Laughs a foothold in cinema alongside its stand-up and television work.
The Edinburgh Fringe, which runs through August, is the obvious next stop for anyone who wants weeks of comedy in many venues. Booking both in one summer makes a long but very funny trip.
Timing & weather
It depends on the format and the number of performers. Most shows last between one and two hours. Galas, with several comics and a host, sit at the longer end, while late club sets in small rooms can be shorter.
No performers had been named by mid-October 2026. Show announcements and ticket releases normally come in spring, through the festival's own website and social channels. Popular galas and headliners can sell quickly once they go on sale.
Families & accessibility
The free outdoor programme suits families, and children are welcome on the square. Check each paid show before buying for children, because much stand-up is aimed squarely at adults, and the late club nights are no place for kids.
Booking
Yes. The outdoor programme on Place des Festivals is free, and it is not just filler: in 2026 it included a full concert by a household name. Arrive early for the big ones, because there is no reserved space.
The 2026 edition used about 25, from the large theatre at Place des Arts to small clubs. Almost all are close together downtown, which makes it easy to see two or three shows in a night.
