Kandy View Point is a roadside lookout on Rajapihilla Mawatha, about 1.5 km from the centre, looking over Kandy Lake and the city toward the hills, with a few small craft shops nearby. It is free and especially popular at sunset with photographers. Twenty to 30 minutes is enough for an overview of the town.
Kandy View Point is the roadside lookout on Rajapihilla Mawatha in Kandy, Sri Lanka, about 1.5 km from the centre, with a view over Kandy Lake and the city towards the hills. A few small craft shops stand nearby. It suits sunset photographers and anyone wanting a quick overview of the town.
The lake fills the foreground. King Sri Wickrama Rajasinghe built it between 1807 and 1812, beside the Temple of the Tooth, and its shore runs about 3.4 km. The island in the middle once held a royal pavilion. As the light fades, the town lights come on beneath you. Early morning often brings mist over the lake.
Many guides use the names Kandy View Point and Arthur's Seat for the same stretch of Rajapihilla Mawatha, so do not expect two very different views. The Arthur's Seat deck was rebuilt by the municipal council in 2016, and in 2015 the council counted around 1,500 visitors a day along here in the November to May season.
We check practical details such as entry rules, seasons and costs against official government and tourism sources.
