What to expect

LATAM Airlines Brasil (IATA JJ), formerly TAM Linhas Aéreas, is the largest airline in Brazil on both domestic and international routes and part of the Chile-based LATAM Airlines Group. From hubs in São Paulo, Brasília and Fortaleza it flies to about 87 destinations across Brazil, South America, North America and Europe. It is the natural choice for travel within Brazil and for long-haul trips from São Paulo.

From air taxi to Brazil's biggest airline

Rolim Amaro founded TAM, Táxi Aéreo Marília, as an air taxi company on 21 February 1961. TAM, Transportes Aéreos Marília, followed on 11 November 1975, and regional flights began on 12 July 1976. The company went public in 1986, carried its three millionth passenger in 1988, and in 1997 ordered 45 Airbus jets and launched its first international route, to Miami. European flights followed in 1999 through a codeshare with Air France.

TAM became TAM Linhas Aéreas in 2000 and grew quickly; in 2008 it carried 30.1 million passengers. It joined Star Alliance on 13 May 2010. In August 2010 it agreed to merge with Chile's LAN, and the deal was completed on 22 June 2012. TAM moved from Star Alliance to oneworld on 31 March 2014, announced the LATAM brand in 2015 and took the LATAM Brasil name on 5 May 2016. LATAM left oneworld on 1 May 2020.

Four hubs in São Paulo, Brasília and Fortaleza

LATAM Brasil has four hubs: São Paulo Guarulhos for international and domestic connections, São Paulo Congonhas for the city's busy domestic routes, Brasília in the centre of the country and Fortaleza in the north-east. Porto Alegre and Rio de Janeiro Galeão are focus cities.

In 2023 the airline held 37.8 per cent of Brazil's domestic market and 18.2 per cent of the international market by passenger-kilometres, according to Brazil's aviation regulator ANAC, making it the largest airline in the country on both counts. Codeshare partners include Delta, British Airways, Qantas, Lufthansa and Iberia.

Tips for flying LATAM Brasil

São Paulo has two LATAM hubs, Guarulhos and Congonhas, and a connection between them means a road transfer across the city. Check which airport each flight uses before you book, and keep connections at one airport when you can.
