LATAM Airlines Paraguay (IATA PZ) is the Paraguayan airline of the LATAM Airlines Group, based at Silvio Pettirossi International Airport in Asunción. It runs a short list of international routes from Asunción to São Paulo, Santiago and Lima, where passengers connect to the rest of the LATAM network. It suits travellers from Paraguay heading to Brazil, Chile, Peru and beyond on one LATAM ticket.
The company was founded on 17 November 1962 as Líneas Aéreas Paraguayas, LAP, and started flying in 1963. Its ICAO code LAP and the call sign PARAGUAYA still recall that first name. In 1995 and 1996 it flew as LAPSA Air Paraguay under Ecuador's SAETA, and LAPSA stopped flying in 1996.
On 1 September 1996 a subsidiary of Brazil's TAM bought 80 per cent of the shares and merged the business into Transportes Aéreos del Mercosur, known as TAM Mercosur, which began with two Fokker 100 jets. In March 2008 it dropped the Mercosur name and took on its Brazilian owner's TAM identity. After LAN and TAM combined to form the LATAM Airlines Group, it became LATAM Paraguay on 5 May 2016. The legal name is still Transportes Aéreos del Mercosur S.A.
LATAM Airlines Group, based in Chile, owned 94.98 per cent of the airline as of May 2018, and the government of Paraguay held the remaining 5.02 per cent. Enrique Alcaide is listed as chief executive. Paraguay has no other large national airline, so LATAM Paraguay carries the role of the country's flag carrier.
As of 2026 the network is small: Asunción to São Paulo Guarulhos, Santiago and Lima. Each of these is a large LATAM hub. São Paulo connects to dozens of Brazilian cities and to long-haul flights to Europe and North America, Santiago links to Chile and the southern cone, and Lima opens up Peru, Ecuador, Colombia and the United States.
The route map was once much larger. Over the years the airline flew to many cities in Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Uruguay and Chile, and most of those routes have ended. Montevideo is no longer served, though a return is planned for 2027. LATAM left oneworld in 2020 and works with Delta Air Lines, which owns a stake in the group, so a trip to the United States can combine LATAM and Delta flights. Older guides that list Buenos Aires or Santa Cruz de la Sierra from Asunción on LATAM Paraguay are out of date, so check the current timetable.
Most journeys from Asunción involve a change in São Paulo, Santiago or Lima. Keep every sector on one LATAM ticket so your bags are checked through and a missed connection is rebooked by the airline.
