What to expect

LATAM Airlines Peru, called LAN Peru until 2015, is the largest airline in Peru and part of LATAM Airlines Group. It flies from Jorge Chavez International Airport in Lima to 18 Peruvian cities, including Cusco, Arequipa, Iquitos and Tacna, and to destinations across the Americas. For visitors heading to Machu Picchu, Arequipa or the Amazon, it is the airline most domestic itineraries are built on, and Lima is one of the group's main connecting hubs.

A short history of LATAM Airlines Peru

LAN Peru was set up in Lima in July 1998 and began flying on 2 July 1999 with domestic routes from Lima to Cusco and Arequipa. Miami followed on 15 November 1999. In September 2002 it became a subsidiary of LAN Airlines, which held 49% of the shares, and by then it employed about 1,500 people. In 2006 eight Airbus A319s replaced the old Boeing 737-200s on domestic routes, and in 2008 the airline carried about 3.5 million passengers, 2.9 million of them within Peru.

After LAN merged with Brazil's TAM, LAN Peru adopted the LATAM name on 5 May 2016. Delta Air Lines bought 20% of the LATAM group for US$1.9 billion, a deal announced in September 2019, and LATAM left oneworld on 1 May 2020. In 2024 the Peruvian airline showed a new livery in the red and white of the national flag.

Where does LATAM Airlines Peru fly?

The domestic network covers 18 cities, among them Lima, Cusco, Arequipa, Tacna on the Chilean border, Chiclayo and Trujillo on the northern coast and Iquitos in the Amazon. Arequipa and Cusco are focus cities as well as tourist destinations. Lima to Cusco, the first route the airline ever flew, still carries the most visitors.

Over the years the international network has covered 18 countries, from Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Colombia to Mexico, Cuba, the United States, Spain, France and the United Kingdom, though some of those routes have since ended. Miami is listed as a focus city. Korean Air and WestJet codeshare on some LATAM Peru flights, and the Delta joint venture links Lima with Delta's US network.

How large is LATAM in Peru?

LATAM Airlines Peru carries most of the country's domestic air traffic, with a market share once reported at 73.4%. LATAM Airlines Group owns 49% of the company and Manuel van Oordt is chief executive. The airline also runs its own engineering base in Lima: Peru's aviation authority approved it as a maintenance workshop in October 2006, and from October 2009 it was allowed to service aircraft of other operators as well.

Baggage allowance

On LATAM Perú, the bag allowance follows your fare type, cabin and route, and the exact figure is printed on your LP e-ticket.

Cabin bag only

Domestic Light fares include only a small item; long-haul fares include checked baggage. Check your e-ticket.

LATAM's cheapest fares within Peru cover a small personal item only, and a cabin suitcase or checked bag costs extra. Travellers on a Machu Picchu trip usually carry more than that, so compare fare brands on the official LATAM website before booking. Domestic fares for foreign visitors and Peruvian residents are sold in the same system, so check that the price shown applies to your passport.

Pro tip: Cusco flights are usually in the morning and can be affected by weather; plan a buffer before Machu Picchu train or tour bookings.
