Museum Hotel is a 34-room cave and stone-house hotel at Tekelli Mahallesi No. 1 in Uchisar, the highest point of Cappadocia in central Turkey. It is the only Relais and Châteaux member in Cappadocia, and with a minimum age of 10 and a quiet, museum-like setting, it suits couples and adult travellers interested in history and food.
Uchisar Castle is 1 km away and the Goreme Open Air Museum 4 km. The Zelve Open Air Museum is 8 km, the Pasabag and Devrent valleys 10 km, Urgup 15 km and Kaymakli Underground City 25 km. Restoration of the ancient cave dwellings and stone houses began in 1998, and the hotel opened in 2003 as what its owners call the first museum-concept hotel. It is part of Indigo Group. The founder's collection of antiques from the Hittite, Roman, Byzantine, Seljuk and Ottoman periods is displayed in the rooms and gardens.
No two of the 34 cave and stone rooms are the same. Categories run from Deluxe Rooms through Deluxe, Superior, Prime and Imperial Suites to Imperial Pool Suites with private pools. Views are over the mountains or the gardens. All rooms are non-smoking; ask for one with a balcony or terrace if you want to smoke outdoors. The original terrain means stairs, uneven ground and low ceilings, so the hotel is not suitable for wheelchair users.
Lil'a, listed in the MICHELIN Guide, serves Cappadocian and Turkish dishes à la carte, and non-guests can book lunch or dinner when tables are free. Cavo, wine tastings and private dining in the Loggia are also offered. The breakfast buffet uses produce from the hotel's ecological garden.
The outdoor Roman pool is kept at 30 to 32 degrees, even in winter, and is for hotel guests only. Massages and private bath rituals take place in the rooms or the therapy lounge.
Check-in is from 2:00 PM and check-out by 12:00 PM. Dogs weighing 10 kg or less are allowed.
The hotel was built from the restored ruins of an old cliff village, and owner Ömer, an antiques collector, filled it with tapestries, furniture, robes and objects from the Roman and Ottoman periods. Lil'a opens every evening and uses produce from the organic garden; its signature dish is Nevşehir tava, a lamb and pepper casserole. Guests can book a cooking lesson with the hotel's chefs. Hot-air balloons often pass close to the rooms at sunrise. April to June and September to November are the most comfortable months, since winters are cold and summers hot, and Ürgüp holds its International Wine and Grape Festival in October.
