Precision Air is a Tanzanian airline headquartered in Dar es Salaam, with its main hub at Julius Nyerere International Airport (DAR) and a second hub at Kilimanjaro (JRO). It flies ATR turboprops on domestic routes and to Nairobi, and suits travellers reaching Tanzanian cities and safari gateways such as Arusha and Mwanza.
Precision Air was incorporated as a private company in January 1991 by Michael Shirima. It began as a charter operator and started scheduled flights in November 1993. In 2006 it became the first Tanzanian airline to pass the IATA Operational Safety Audit.
Kenya Airways bought 49 percent in 2003 for 2 million US dollars, while Shirima kept 51 percent. The airline listed on the Dar es Salaam Stock Exchange in October 2011 under the ticker PAL, which diluted both holdings. As of March 2016 Shirima held about 42.9 percent and Kenya Airways about 41.2 percent. Harry Kitilya is chairperson and Patrick Mwanri chief executive.
Precision Air once flew well beyond Tanzania, to Johannesburg, Lusaka, Entebbe and Lubumbashi. Those routes have ended. Losses on Johannesburg flights, which stopped in September 2012, added to financial trouble in 2013, when the airline sought a bailout of 32 million US dollars. Today the network centres on Dar es Salaam, with routes to Arusha, Mwanza, Mtwara, Zanzibar, Kahama and Nairobi, and flights to the Comoros listed as suspended.
For fiscal 2024 Precision Air reported revenue of 162 billion Tanzanian shillings, about 61 million US dollars, and a loss of 32 billion shillings. It had 413 employees.
Precision Air codeshares with Kenya Airways and RwandAir, which lets travellers arriving on those airlines connect onto Precision Air's domestic flights.
Like all Tanzanian airlines, Precision Air does not fly into the European Union.
