Prof. Dr. Md. Faruque Pathan is a senior consultant in Endocrinology & Diabetes at BIRDEM General Hospital. An endocrinologist with 32 years in practice, qualified MBBS, FCPS, MD. Sees patients at 3 chambers; a first consultation costs ৳1,500.
Prof. Dr. Md. Faruque Pathan is a senior consultant endocrinologist at BIRDEM General Hospital, Shahbagh, where he has run the diabetes clinic since 2004. His outpatient work centres on type 2 diabetes that has stopped responding to oral agents, insulin initiation and titration, and the thyroid and pituitary disorders referred in from general medicine across the division.
He sees roughly 60 patients a week across two chambers and keeps a fixed number of same-week slots for people travelling in from outside Dhaka, which is why the mobile line exists alongside online booking. Consultations run to 15 minutes as standard and 25 for a first visit, since the first appointment includes a full medication review and a diet plan drawn up with the nutrition unit on the same floor.
His research interest is the progression of diabetic kidney disease in South Asian patients, and he has published on early detection through urine ACR screening in primary care. He teaches on the FCPS endocrinology programme and supervises four fellows each year.
Patients are asked to bring previous prescriptions, any test reports from the last six months and a glucose diary or meter if they are already on treatment. Reports ordered at the visit are usually ready within 24 hours and can be emailed on request.

Patient Policy
Prof. Pathan takes special requests: add them in the booking step.
BIRDEM General Hospital sits Saturday, Monday and Wednesday. BIRDEM-2 runs 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM on Sunday and Tuesday.
Patients are asked to complete registration 20 minutes before the booked slot and to show a National ID at the counter.
Booking through this page is free. The consultation fee is paid at the counter on the day of the visit.
Walk-ins are seen only after the booked list is cleared, which on a Monday evening can mean a two-hour wait.
No booking fee is taken, so nothing is forfeited when you cancel. Rescheduling inside 2 hours is handled by the help desk on 09666 700 100.
Clinics are occasionally moved at short notice for surgery or an emergency admission. You will be called on the number given at booking and offered the next slot at either chamber.
Bring all of the following to every visit:
- National ID, and the Diabetic Association card if you hold one
- Every current prescription, including drugs from other doctors
- Test reports from the last six months (older ones still help show a trend)
- Your glucose meter or written reading diary if you are already on treatment
A first visit cannot be completed properly without a record of recent readings.
Consultation fees
Paid at the counter on the day. Members of the Diabetic Association pay 20% less on every consultation type.
Tests, pharmacy and any procedure are billed separately and are not included in the figures above. Keep every receipt for insurance.
Ask at the report counter when you give the sample. This matters if you are travelling in from outside Dhaka.
Imaging films and discharge summaries are collected in person once the bill is cleared. Prof. Pathan keeps a copy of every visit on file, so his own prescriptions need not be brought back.
One person may accompany you into the consultation room. Children under 12 are not permitted in the chamber corridor during evening clinics.
Wheelchair assistance is available at the outpatient entrance and does not need to be booked.
- Blood glucose below 4 mmol/L or above 20 mmol/L
- Chest pain, breathlessness or confusion
- A foot wound that is spreading, discharging or numb
- Vomiting that stops you keeping fluids or medication down
Go to the emergency department at BIRDEM General Hospital, open 24 hours, or call 999.
Cash is accepted at every counter. The chamber reserves the right to hold an amount against the card before a procedure.

Patients are asking
No referral is needed. You can book directly from this page or walk in during chamber hours, though walk-ins are seen only after the booked list is cleared.
There is no dedicated hospital shuttle. Prepaid taxis from Hazrat Shahjalal Intl. take 40 to 60 minutes; the medical tourism desk can arrange a pickup with 24 hours' notice.
Twenty minutes is enough on most days. Between 8:00 and 11:00 AM the registration counter is busiest, so allow thirty if you are also collecting a report.
Yes. The visitor car park is on site and charged hourly. It fills by 9:00 AM on weekdays, so allow extra time or use the Shahbagh metro.
No. Keep taking everything as prescribed and bring the strips or a written list. Stopping a drug before review makes it much harder to judge what is working.
Shahbagh metro station (MRT-6) is a four-minute walk and the Shahbagh bus stand is three. The National Museum sits directly opposite the main gate.
Yes. Two of the endocrinology consultants are women and both hold Sunday and Tuesday clinics. Filter the consultant list by department to see who is on this week.
Pathology reports can be emailed on request at no extra charge. Imaging films still have to be collected in person once the bill is cleared.
Both blocks have ramp access and lifts to every floor. Wheelchairs can be borrowed free of charge from the main reception against a deposit slip.
Free Wi-Fi covers the outpatient lobby, cabins and the visitor cafeteria. It is switched off inside the ICU and CCU.

General
National ID, your Diabetic Association card if you hold one, previous prescriptions and any test reports from the last six months. Bring your current medicine strips or a written list, and your glucose diary or meter if you are already on treatment.
Only if bloods are being taken that morning. If you already have HbA1c or fasting glucose results from the last six months, bring them and fasting is not needed. When in doubt, come fasting for a morning slot.
