Steigenberger Cecil Hotel Alexandria is a historic four-star hotel of 85 rooms and 3 suites at 16 Saad Zaghloul Square in central Alexandria, Egypt, facing the Corniche and the Eastern Harbour near Raml Station. The Metzger family built the Cecil Hotel in 1929 on the site where Cleopatra's Needles once stood. The Egyptian government seized it after the 1952 revolution. In 2007 legal ownership returned to the Metzger family, who sold it back to the government. Accor ran it for years as the Sofitel Cecil Alexandria, and it has carried the Steigenberger brand since 2014.
Somerset Maugham, Winston Churchill and Al Capone stayed here, and the hotel appears in Lawrence Durrell's The Alexandria Quartet and Naguib Mahfouz's Miramar.
Standard Rooms are about 20 m². Deluxe Rooms of about 22 m² have a balcony over the square, and Superior Rooms of about 25 m² have a balcony with a sea view. The Junior Suite is about 42 m² and the Prestige Suites about 70 m². Every room has air conditioning, satellite TV, a desk, a safe, a minibar and tea and coffee facilities. Wi-Fi is free throughout, and the hotel keeps dedicated smoking rooms.
Citadel Restaurant serves the breakfast buffet from 6:00 to 10:30 and Mediterranean lunch and dinner from 12:00 to 23:00. The Café Bar is open around the clock, and the Terrace Café on the promenade opens from April to October. The Monty Bar, named after Field Marshal Montgomery, who stayed at the hotel, has live entertainment from 21:00 to 02:00. There is also the Diamond Club nightclub, open from 20:00 to 02:00, three meeting rooms for up to 220 guests and 24-hour room service.
St. Mark's Coptic Cathedral is about 340 m away. The Alexandria National Museum and the Bibliotheca Alexandrina are each about 1.1 km, and the Citadel of Qaitbay and Pompey's Pillar about 2.1 km. El Raml tram station is about 300 m from the door and Alexandria railway station about 4 km. Borg El Arab Airport (HBE) is about 52 km by road.
