What to expect

TAAG Angola Airlines (IATA DT) is the state-owned national airline of Angola, based in Luanda and flying from the new Dr. António Agostinho Neto International Airport. It runs domestic flights across Angola, regional routes in Africa and long-haul services to Portugal, Brazil and Cuba, and it is the main airline for business travellers, the Angolan diaspora and visitors flying to Luanda.

From DTA to TAAG

TAAG's roots go back to September 1938, when the colonial government set up DTA, the Divisão dos Transportes Aéreos. Flights began on 17 July 1940. DTA joined IATA in 1951 and brought in its first Fokker F27 turboprops in 1962. On 1 October 1973 the airline took the name TAAG, Transportes Aéreos de Angola, and after independence in 1975 it became Angola's flag carrier.

In September 2014 TAAG signed a ten-year management deal with Emirates, which Emirates ended in 2017.

The new Luanda airport

Dr. António Agostinho Neto International Airport replaced the old Quatro de Fevereiro airport as TAAG's base. TAAG started operations there in February 2024, and the first passenger flights, to Cabinda, left on 10 November 2024. The airport cost more than US$3 billion and can handle about 50,000 tonnes of cargo a year. Older bookings and guides may still mention the old airport, so check which one your ticket shows.

Angolan, African and long-haul routes and partners

TAAG flies to cities across Angola and runs regional routes within Africa, while long-haul flights go to Portugal, Brazil and Cuba. In 2014 the network counted 31 destinations: 13 domestic, 11 elsewhere in Africa, three in Latin America, two in Europe and three in the Middle East and Asia-Pacific.

It has codeshares with Air France, British Airways, Brussels Airlines, Cabo Verde Airlines, GOL, Iberia, Kenya Airways, KLM, Air Mozambique (formerly LAM), Lufthansa, Royal Air Maroc and South African Airways, which opens up connections in Europe and Africa on one ticket. TAAG is not in a global alliance.

State ownership and management

The Angolan government owns all of TAAG. Eduardo Fairen has been chief executive since 2023, and Clóvis Rosa is chairman. TAAG reported a small profit of about US$800,000 in 2022, helped by cargo, but Aviation Week reported a loss of about US$145 million in May 2026. A subsidiary, Angola Air Charter, runs cargo charters around Africa.

Flying TAAG via Luanda

Luanda is a useful connecting point between Lisbon or São Paulo and southern Africa, and TAAG fares on these routes can undercut European carriers. Leave plenty of time for transfers at the new airport and confirm which airport and terminal your flight uses before travel.

Cheap tickets

How to find a cheaper TAAG fare without giving up the bag or seat you need.

  1. 01

    Try midweek DT flights

TAAG fares are often lower on midweek departures. Search a spread of dates around your trip to find the cheaper days.

  2. 02

    Avoid peak seasons

Christmas and the European summer are busy on routes between Luanda and Portugal.

  3. 03

Price the bundle, not the base fare

The lowest DT fare is not always the cheapest trip once bags and seats are added. Compare the fare types before you pay.
