In short

Tabuk Castle is a restored Ottoman fortress in central Tabuk dating from 1559, built to guard a water station on the pilgrim route from Syria to Madinah and now open as a museum. It is a short, rewarding stop for travellers interested in the history of the old pilgrim roads.

Tabuk Castle stands in the centre of Tabuk, the capital of Tabuk Province in north western Saudi Arabia. It is one of the oldest surviving buildings in the city.

The present fortress dates from 1559, during the Ottoman period. It was built to protect a water source and served as a security and observation post and as one of the stations on the Syrian Hajj route, which carried pilgrims from the Levant to Madinah and Makkah. Restoration took place under Sultan Mehmed IV, who reigned from 1648 to 1687, when decorative ceramic tiles were added at the entrance, and again in 1844 under Sultan Abdulmejid I, as recorded in an inscription in the mosque's mihrab.

The castle is a compact two-storey stone building, with its floors linked by a stairway. It contains rooms for the garrison and a small mosque with its mihrab. From the upper level there are views over the old part of Tabuk.

The castle was restored again in 1950 and in a major renovation in 1992 overseen by the antiquities and museums agency of the Ministry of Education. The upper floor holds an open-air mosque. The castle opened to visitors as the Tabuk Fortress Museum in 2013. It is now managed by the Ministry of Tourism and its heritage bodies and works as a small museum explaining the history of Tabuk and the pilgrim route.
