What to expect

TAROM (IATA RO) is the state-owned flag carrier of Romania and the country's oldest airline still flying. Based at Bucharest Henri Coandă International Airport in Otopeni, it flies to Romanian cities and to destinations in Europe, the Middle East and North Africa. A SkyTeam member, it suits travellers heading to Romania and those connecting to Air France, KLM and other SkyTeam partners.

A history going back to 1920

TAROM's story begins on 1 January 1920 with CFRNA, the French-Romanian Company for Air Navigation, registered in Paris that April. The company became SNNA in 1928 and LARES in 1930, and in 1937 LARES merged with its rival SARTA.

After the Second World War the airline was replaced by TARS, a joint Romanian-Soviet company, which started domestic flights from Bucharest Băneasa on 1 February 1946. When Romania bought out the Soviet share, the airline took the name TAROM on 18 September 1954.

TAROM flew its first transatlantic flight in 1966, bought British BAC One-Eleven jets in 1968 and put the long-range Ilyushin Il-62 into service in 1973. Regular flights to New York began on 14 May 1974. Airbus A310s joined in 1992.

Losses and restructuring

TAROM lost up to US$68 million a year in the 1990s and cut its loss-making intercontinental routes between 2001 and 2003; US flights ended in 2003. Losses returned later, 55 million euros in 2009 and 79 million euros in 2010. A private manager, Christian Heinzmann, was brought in as chief executive in 2012.

The 2020s restructuring plan renews the fleet and reforms operations. In 2024 TAROM reported revenue of 433 million euros and an operating result of 60 million euros, with 1,312 employees. Cristian Anghel is chief executive.

Romanian state ownership

The Romanian government, through the Ministry of Transport, owns 98.01 per cent of TAROM. Bucharest Airport and the air navigation service ROMATSA hold about 1 per cent each, and a tiny stake belongs to a private investor.

Network and codeshares

TAROM flies about 50 routes, including charter and seasonal flights, in 22 countries across Europe, the Middle East and North Africa, eight of them within Romania. Cluj-Napoca is a focus airport.

For longer journeys TAROM relies on codeshares with Air Europa, Air France, Air Serbia, airBaltic, Bulgaria Air, Condor, El Al, KLM, Middle East Airlines, Scandinavian Airlines and Turkish Airlines. Travel to the United States goes through Air France's hub at Paris Charles de Gaulle.

  2. 02

    Avoid peak seasons

Summer and Christmas, when Romanians abroad travel home, are the busiest periods.

  3. 03

Price the bundle, not the base fare

A TAROM fare that includes a checked bag, seat choice or cheaper changes can cost less overall than adding those extras later.
