The Datai Langkawi is a five-star rainforest and beach resort on Datai Bay, at the north-western tip of Langkawi island in Kedah, Malaysia. National Geographic has named the bay among the world's top ten beaches, and the resort is a member of The Leading Hotels of the World. It suits couples, families and nature lovers who want rainforest and a white-sand beach in one place.

The 1993 opening and the 2017 to 2018 renovation

The Datai opened in October 1993, designed by architects Kerry Hill and Didier Lefort. It closed on 4 September 2017 for a renovation of about US$60 million led by Lefort and reopened in September 2018. The 121 units break down as 54 rooms, 12 suites and 55 villas.

Airport, Kuah jetty and private transfers

Langkawi International Airport (LGK) is about 34 km by road, around 50 minutes by car. Kuah town and jetty are about 45 km, roughly an hour. One-way private transfers cost MYR 350 by MPV for up to five people, MYR 450 by executive limousine or MYR 550 by luxury limousine per vehicle, plus 10% service charge. Foreign visitors must register for the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC) at least three days before arrival.

Canopy, Rainforest and Beach collections

The 121 rooms, suites and villas are grouped into the Canopy Collection, the Rainforest Collection and the Beach Collection, which includes a two-bedroom beach villa with a private pool. Some rooms look across the Andaman Sea towards Tarutao Island. Children aged 11 and under stay free using existing bedding. Guests from age 12 count as adults, and a daybed can be made up as an extra bed for MYR 420 per night plus taxes.

The Gulai House, The Pavilion and The Dining Room

The Gulai House, The Pavilion and The Dining Room are the restaurants, with The Beach Club and Beach Bar, the Lobby Lounge and private dining. Breakfast is a buffet, and it costs MYR 80 plus taxes for children aged 5 to 11.

Spa and activities

The Spa offers treatments, holistic activities and the Pulih fitness programme. There is a health club, pools, tennis and padel, watersports and sailing. The Els Club Teluk Datai, an 18-hole par-72 course, is about five minutes by car. Babysitting can be booked with 24 hours' notice.

Nature and sustainability

The Nature Centre introduces the surrounding rainforest, home to dusky langurs, Sunda colugos and tokay geckos. The Datai Pledge is the resort's sustainability programme, and it holds EarthCheck Silver certification. Check-in is from 3:00 PM and check-out by 12:00 PM. Pets are not allowed.
