The Grand, York is a five-star hotel on Station Rise, just inside York's medieval city walls and about three minutes on foot from York railway station. It occupies the 1906 headquarters of the North Eastern Railway Company, and it suits rail travellers, spa-goers and visitors who want the Minster and The Shambles within walking distance.
The building went up between 1900 and 1906, when the North Eastern Railway was one of Britain's wealthiest companies. Horace Field shaped its exterior and interiors on William Bell's structure, and it has been Grade II* listed since 1983. It opened as a hotel in 2010 with 107 rooms. Splendid Hospitality Group bought it in 2014 and enlarged it in 2017 and 2018, bringing the total to 207.
Architect William Bell designed the building for the North Eastern Railway Company, and many guest rooms were once railway offices. Some doors still carry their original office numbers. Belgian marble, oak-panelled boardrooms, wrought-iron balustrades and decorative plaster ceilings survive throughout, and the Chairman's Suite and Grand Boardroom are now used for meetings and weddings.
The War Memorial Gardens are outside the front entrance. York Minster, the Museum Gardens, the Yorkshire Museum, The Shambles, Clifford's Tower, the National Railway Museum and the Coney Street shops are all reachable on foot.
The hotel has 207 rooms, 13 of them suites. Classic and Executive rooms make up most of them. Grand Family Rooms take up to four and have space for extra beds, and Heritage and Grand Heritage Suites lead up to a Penthouse with a roll-top bath looking over the York skyline. All rooms have Egyptian cotton linen, Molton Brown toiletries, air conditioning, free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs, a safe and tea and coffee facilities, with room service around the clock. Interconnecting rooms can be requested.
The Rise restaurant serves breakfast and dinner; breakfast choices include buffet, continental and full English. The 1906 Bar specialises in whisky and cocktails. The SubRosa Spa is built into the former railway vaults, with an indoor heated pool, a hydrotherapy pool, saunas, a steam room and a relaxation room, and there is a separate fitness centre.
