The London Dungeon is a walk-through attraction in County Hall on the South Bank of the Thames, next to the London Eye and opposite the Houses of Parliament. It is operated by Merlin Entertainments.
The Dungeon first opened in 1974 in vaults under London Bridge station on Tooley Street as a horror-themed museum. It moved to its current site in County Hall in 2013, with new sets, effects and shows. The format later spread to other cities, including Edinburgh, York, Amsterdam and Berlin.
Visitors move in groups through a series of themed rooms, where actors in costume tell stories drawn from about a thousand years of London history, mixing humour and fright. Scenes cover subjects such as Jack the Ripper, Sweeney Todd, the plague, the Gunpowder Plot and the torture chambers of the Tower. The tour includes special effects and two rides, a boat ride and a drop ride. The full experience lasts around 1.5 to 2 hours.
Tickets are timed and usually cheaper when booked online in advance, and combined tickets with other Merlin attractions are common. The content is scary and includes dark themes: the operator recommends it for ages 12 and over, children under 5 are not admitted, and under-16s must be with an adult.
