The Midland is a four-star hotel at 16 Peter Street in central Manchester, facing St Peter's Square. The Midland Railway built it to serve the old Manchester Central station, and its red brick and terracotta front is still one of the city's best-known buildings. It suits conference delegates, concert-goers and weekend visitors who want the tram at the door.
The Midland opened on 5 September 1903. Charles Trubshaw designed it in Edwardian Baroque style, and it has been a Grade II* listed building since 1974. Charles Rolls met Henry Royce here in 1904, the meeting that led to Rolls-Royce.
The St Peter's Square tram stop is about 50 m from the entrance and Manchester Oxford Road station about 200 m. Manchester Piccadilly is about 1.2 km. The Bridgewater Hall is around 300 m away and the Manchester Central convention centre a few minutes on foot. Manchester Airport is about 20 km by road, around 40 minutes by car, and the hotel can book private transfers. There is no car park on site: the concierge offers valet parking at GBP 30 per 24 hours, and NCP Manchester Central is about three minutes' walk.
Leonardo Hotels runs the building, which has 312 rooms and suites. Original Double rooms are the entry level. Superior rooms come with a double, twin, king or two double beds, and there are Executive King rooms, junior suites with two double beds and the Midland Suite. Accessible rooms have roll-in showers, family rooms can be booked, and Wi-Fi is free throughout.
Adam Reid at The French is the fine dining restaurant, open Wednesday to Saturday evenings. The Tea Room serves afternoon tea and lighter meals, and The Midland Bar concentrates on cocktails. Breakfast is a buffet from 7:00 to 10:00am on weekdays and a little later at weekends, and room service is available. Children's menus, high chairs and booster seats can be requested.
The Rena Spa has a heated indoor pool, a heated relaxation pool, a sauna, a steam room, an experience shower and a gym. Children can swim during set hours with an adult. The hotel has twelve meeting rooms, the largest being the Alexandra Suite for up to 700 guests, and it hosts many conferences and weddings.
A pre-authorisation of GBP 50 per room per night is taken on arrival and released at check-out, and the Manchester City Visitor Charge adds GBP 1 per room per night. Check-in is from 3:00pm and check-out by 11:00am. Only guide dogs and registered service animals are allowed.
