A colonial heritage hotel in central Yogyakarta, about 180 m from the Tugu monument, and a member of Historic Hotels of the World. Guests get a courtyard pool, Indonesian and Chinese food at Paprika and free parking, which makes it an easy city base. Rooms start from just US$70 a night.
The Phoenix Hotel Yogyakarta is a five-star heritage hotel at Jl. Jenderal Sudirman No. 9 in Jetis, central Yogyakarta, part of Accor's Handwritten Collection and a member of Historic Hotels of the World. It stands about 180 m from the Tugu Yogyakarta monument. Travellers who like colonial architecture, a courtyard pool and an easy base for the city's sights stay here.
The oldest part of The Phoenix was built in 1918 as a private home for a wealthy Chinese merchant. During the Great Depression of the 1930s the property passed into Dutch hands, and in 1942 the Japanese occupying forces took it over. After Indonesian independence it served for a time as a residence and office of President Soekarno, before it returned to the family's heir and was turned into a hotel. That chain of owners is why the hotel belongs to Historic Hotels of the World.
About 144 rooms and suites face a central outdoor pool or the city. Superior Heritage rooms of 25 m² have a queen bed or twin beds. Deluxe Legacy rooms are 35 m² with a king bed or twins, and some face the pool. Phoenix Executive rooms measure 46 m², and the 60 m² Legendary Suite is the largest.
Children of all ages can stay. Fees may apply for children using existing beds, and extra bed and cot rules depend on the room.
Paprika is the main restaurant, serving Indonesian and Chinese dishes with tables outdoors. The buffet breakfast runs from 6:00 AM to 10:00 AM and costs about IDR 145,000 per adult when it is not included. There is also a bar and lounge, and room service runs 24 hours.
The hotel has a spa, a sauna and a gym. Eight meeting rooms, a 24-hour business centre and a tour desk cover work trips and day excursions. Smoking is banned in public areas, with a designated smoking spot provided.
The Tugu Golong Gilig and the Tugu monument are about 150 to 180 m from the door. Yogyakarta (Tugu) railway station is about 1.1 km, Gadjah Mada University about 1.5 km and Malioboro Mall about 1.8 km. Adisutjipto International Airport is roughly 11 km by road.
Self parking is free, which makes a hire car practical for trips out to the temples. Check-in is from 2:00 PM and check-out is before 12:00 PM, and the front desk is open around the clock. Pets are not allowed.
