The Plaza is a five-star Fairmont-managed hotel at 768 Fifth Avenue, on the corner of Central Park South in Midtown Manhattan, New York. Central Park, the Central Park Zoo and Bergdorf Goodman are on its doorstep. It suits visitors who want a historic landmark, afternoon tea and the park outside the door, and families travelling with children who know Eloise.
The Plaza opened on 1 October 1907. Henry Janeway Hardenbergh designed the original building, and Warren and Wetmore added an annex in 1919 to 1921. It takes its name from Grand Army Plaza, and the main entrance faces the Pulitzer Fountain. At its peak it had more than 800 rooms. The Palm Court was modelled on the Palm Court of London's Carlton Hotel, and its stained glass ceiling was restored in the mid-2000s. The building became a National Historic Landmark in 1986 and has appeared in films including Home Alone 2: Lost in New York and The Great Gatsby.
Carnegie Hall, Rockefeller Center, St. Patrick's Cathedral, the Museum of Modern Art and Columbus Circle are all a short walk or ride away. LaGuardia Airport (LGA) is about 16 km away, JFK about 27 km and Newark Liberty about 28 km, roughly 30 to 55 minutes by car depending on traffic.
Part of the building is now private residences, leaving 282 guest rooms and suites, 102 of them suites. Rooms have a sitting area and large bathrooms with mosaic floors and 24-carat gold-plated fixtures. Beyond the standard rooms there are Legacy Suites, terrace rooms, multi-room connecting suites for families and groups, and one-of-a-kind themed suites such as the Eloise Suite. Cribs and extra beds cannot be added to any room, so families need a room or suite with enough beds.
Afternoon tea at The Palm Court and drinks at The Champagne Bar are the hotel's best-known experiences. In-room and private dining are also available, and breakfast is served from a set menu.
The 111SKIN spa, a hair salon and a fitness centre cover wellness. There is no swimming pool. The concierge arranges guided runs in Central Park and historical tours of the building. Dogs are welcome through Fairmont's Canine Companions programme.
