In short

The USS Arizona Memorial floats over the sunken battleship at Pearl Harbor, Honolulu, where 1,102 of the 1,177 crew killed on 7 December 1941 still lie, reached by a short Navy boat from the visitor centre. The memorial programme is free, with a small booking fee for reserved tickets and $7 daily parking. Plan half a day, or a full day with the Missouri and other sites.

The USS Arizona Memorial floats over the wreck of the battleship USS Arizona in Pearl Harbor, on the south coast of Oahu in Honolulu. It forms part of Pearl Harbor National Memorial, run by the US National Park Service, and is reached only by a short Navy-operated boat from the visitor centre.

On the morning of 7 December 1941, Japanese aircraft attacked the US Pacific Fleet at Pearl Harbor. A bomb set off the forward magazine of the Arizona and the ship sank within minutes. Of the 1,177 sailors and Marines killed on board, 1,102 remain inside the hull. The attack brought the United States into the Second World War.

The white memorial, designed by architect Alfred Preis, was dedicated in 1962. It spans the sunken hull without touching it, and its shape sags in the middle and rises at both ends. The shrine room at the far end carries a marble wall with the names of those killed on the ship. Visitors can look down at parts of the hull and see small drops of oil, often called black tears, still rising to the surface.

The visitor centre on shore has two museum galleries about the road to war and the attack itself, plus outdoor exhibits along the harbour. Several other sites share the area, including the Battleship Missouri, the USS Bowfin submarine museum and the Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum, which charge their own entry.

Entry to the visitor centre and the memorial programme is free, but the programme runs on timed tickets that are best reserved in advance through Recreation.gov for a small booking fee. Bags are not allowed inside, so leave them in the car or use the paid storage near the entrance. Parking costs 7 US dollars a day, paid on the day by scanning a QR code in the car park; it cannot be paid in advance.
