What to expect

Volaris (IATA Y4) is a Mexican ultra low-cost airline headquartered in Santa Fe, Mexico City, and the largest airline in Mexico by passengers, with about 42 per cent of the domestic market. From hubs in Guadalajara, Mexico City and Tijuana it flies to about 69 destinations in Mexico, the United States and Central America. It suits price-conscious travellers, including the many Mexican families who fly between Mexico and the US.

How Volaris began

Volaris started pre-operations in August 2005 as Vuela Airlines, owned in equal 25 per cent shares by Grupo Televisa, the bank Inbursa, TACA Airlines and the Discovery Americas fund. The first scheduled flight, from Toluca to Tijuana, took off on 13 March 2006.

Televisa and Inbursa sold out in July 2010, and a fund linked to Indigo Partners, joined TACA's owners and Discovery Americas. Mexico City flights began in September 2010, picking up routes left by Aerocalifornia and Mexicana, and in March 2011 the hub moved from Toluca to Guadalajara. Volaris became the first airline in North America to fly the Airbus A320neo in September 2016.

Hubs, bases and network

Guadalajara, Mexico City and Tijuana are the hubs, with focus cities at Cancún, León/Del Bajío and Monterrey and crew bases in Culiacán and Morelia as well. Tijuana is popular with travellers from Southern California. The network mixes domestic Mexican routes with flights to the United States and Central America.

Subsidiaries Volaris Costa Rica, flying since November 2016 from San José, and Volaris El Salvador extend the network in Central America. Volaris codeshares with Copa, Frontier, Hainan, Iberia and Turkish Airlines and has an interline deal with Condor. It is not part of a global alliance.

The Viva Aerobus deal

In December 2025 Volaris and its main low-cost rival, Viva Aerobus, signed an agreement to form a shared holding company. Both brands are to continue, and the aim is to cut fleet and operating costs.

Share listings, leadership and passenger numbers

Volaris shares trade in Mexico City (VOLAR) and New York (VLRS). Enrique Beltranena is chief executive. In 2023 the airline carried 33.5 million passengers on 211 routes with an 86 per cent load factor, and it employed 7,198 people.

Flying the ultra low-cost way

The base fare covers the seat and a small personal item. Everything else is an extra, so decide what you need before you book and pay for it online. For trips between Mexico and the US, compare Volaris with Viva Aerobus and US airlines on the same route, as the cheapest headline fare is not always the cheapest once extras are added.
