Walt Disney World Resort, southwest of Orlando in Florida, opened in 1971 and is the largest Disney resort, with four theme parks, two water parks, Disney Springs and dozens of hotels.
Walt Disney World, about 32 km south-west of Orlando in central Florida, opened in 1971 and is the largest Disney resort, with four theme parks, two water parks, Disney Springs and dozens of hotels. One-day, one-park tickets start at $119 at Animal Kingdom on quiet dates, and Magic Kingdom runs about $139 to $209 plus tax. Families usually spend four to seven days.
Walt Disney World Resort lies about 32 kilometres southwest of Orlando in central Florida, mostly in the city of Lake Buena Vista and Bay Lake. It is run by Disney Experiences, a division of the Walt Disney Company, and covers a far larger area than any other Disney resort.
Walt Disney bought the land in the 1960s through shell companies, planning a larger project than Disneyland in California. He died in 1966, and his brother Roy O. Disney saw the resort through to opening on 1 October 1971, with the Magic Kingdom as its first park.
The resort has four theme parks. Magic Kingdom, centred on Cinderella Castle, has the classic Disney rides. EPCOT, opened in 1982, combines technology attractions with the World Showcase of country pavilions around a lake. Disney's Hollywood Studios, opened in 1989, has Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge and Toy Story Land. Disney's Animal Kingdom, opened in 1998, mixes rides with live animals and the Pandora area based on Avatar.
There are also two water parks, Typhoon Lagoon and Blizzard Beach, the Disney Springs shopping and dining district, golf courses and more than 25 Disney-owned hotels. Buses, boats, the monorail and the Skyliner gondola connect the parks and hotels.
Tickets are dated and prices vary by season, and park reservations or add-ons such as Lightning Lane affect queues. Most visitors plan four to seven days. Orlando International Airport is about 30 minutes by road.
Lightning Lane passes, sold separately, let guests book return times for popular rides and are worth weighing up on peak dates when standby lines often pass an hour. Guests staying at Disney hotels can enter the parks earlier than the general public, and on some nights deluxe resort guests get extended evening hours.
The My Disney Experience app holds tickets, ride bookings, mobile food orders and live wait times, so set it up before the trip. Florida summers are hot with afternoon thunderstorms most days from June to September, so plan rides early and save indoor shows for the afternoon.
