In short

Yemenia is the flag carrier of Yemen, operating mainly from Aden International with a small Airbus A320 fleet. It flies a few regional routes to Jeddah, Riyadh, Cairo and Amman, mainly serving travellers to and from Yemen, so check the schedule carefully. Yemenia is not in an alliance and runs Yemenia Sama Club.

Yemenia is Yemen’s national airline. Because of the war, it operates a small fleet mostly from Aden, the country’s main working airport.

What to expect

Yemenia (Yemen Airways, IATA IY) is the national airline of Yemen, 51 per cent owned by the Yemeni government and flying from Aden International Airport with Seiyun as a focus city. Its few flights connect Yemen with Egypt, Jordan, Saudi Arabia and other nearby countries, and for many Yemenis they are among the only practical ways to travel abroad. The airline has lost most of its aircraft in the war.

From Yemen Airlines to Yemenia

Yemenia's roots go back to Yemen Airlines in the late 1940s, and its licence is dated 4 August 1962. From 1967 to 1972 it worked with United Arab Airlines as Yemen Arab Airlines. After nationalisation it was reorganised in September 1972 as Yemen Airways Corporation, and it took the name Yemen Airways on 1 July 1978. Saudi Arabia held 49 per cent from a 1977 joint venture until Yemen bought the shares back in 1992.

When North and South Yemen united in 1990, the southern airline Alyemda was due to merge into Yemenia, and the merger was completed in 1996. The airline brought in Airbus A310s in the 1990s, its first Boeing 737-800 in 2002 and an Airbus A330-200 in 2004.

The war years

Yemenia suspended operations in March 2015 when the civil war escalated, and Aden flights resumed that August. A blockade from February 2016 to November 2017 kept flights to a minimum.

Limited flights from Sanaa to Amman restarted on 16 May 2022. On 17 June 2023 Yemenia flew the first direct flight between Yemen and Saudi Arabia in almost seven years, carrying Hajj pilgrims to Jeddah.

Five domestic and six international routes

As of July 2024 Yemenia listed five domestic and six international scheduled destinations, flying from Sanaa, Aden and Seiyun. Domestic points have included Aden, Seiyun, Mukalla, Al Ghaydah and Socotra, and international routes have included Cairo, Amman, Jeddah, Riyadh, Kuwait, Djibouti, Addis Ababa, Mumbai and Dubai. Many routes are now suspended. Yemenia is not in an alliance.
