Thirty butler-served suites around a restored 19th-century teak house on the Ping River in Chiang Mai's Wat Gate district. Couples and history lovers come for the heritage setting, the 25 m pool and the Nitra Serenity Centre spa. The lowest suite rate listed here is US$400 a night.
137 Pillars House is a 30-suite boutique hotel at 2 Soi 1, Nawatgate Road, in the Wat Gate district of Chiang Mai, northern Thailand, on the east bank of the Ping River. Every suite comes with a butler, and the restored 19th-century teak house at its centre makes it a strong choice for couples and history-minded travellers.
The teak house on stilts was built in the late 1800s as part of the Borneo Company's headquarters, when the firm was central to northern Thailand's teak trade. A former owner, Jack Bain, counted the 137 pillars holding it up, and the name stuck. The restored house now holds the bar and lounges.
Wat Gate is a short walk from Warorot Market and the Flower Market, and the Night Bazaar and Tha Pae Gate are close. The Old City temples, including Wat Chedi Luang and Wat Phra Singh, are a short ride across the river. Chiang Mai International Airport (CNX) is about 8.9 km by road, around 20 minutes. Transfers cost THB 1,300++ each way by sedan for up to two guests or THB 1,500++ by van; book them in advance by email.
There are five suite categories, named after figures from the teak era, from the 70 sqm Rajah Brooke Suite to the 135 sqm Louis Leonowens Pool Suite with its own pool. Each suite has a balcony or terrace over the gardens and a large bathroom with a Victorian or sunken tub plus indoor and outdoor garden showers.
Breakfast is served in The Dining Room from 6:30 to 10:30 AM, à la carte, with Northern Thai dishes and Western classics. Palette serves gourmet dinners, and Jack Bain's Bar mixes classic cocktails. Afternoon tea is served in the house or out in the gardens.
The 25 by 5.5 m pool is open from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM. The air-conditioned gym is open 24 hours, and the Nitra Serenity Centre spa runs daily from 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM. Pool and gym are for hotel guests, though visitors can use them through the Nitra Wellness Membership with a spa treatment. The hotel arranges guided tours, including temple visits by samlor (cycle rickshaw).
137 Pillars House holds one MICHELIN Key. Inspectors singled out Palette for dishes such as slow-cooked northern curry lamb, and the hotel runs cooking classes in its show kitchen. Much of the teak house is a careful reconstruction with modern wiring, plumbing and air conditioning, so the 19th-century feel comes without the old discomforts. The Library Bar and the Parlour Lounge are good spots for a quiet drink.
