What to expect

Aeroméxico (IATA: AM, ICAO: AMX) is the flag carrier of Mexico, a full-service airline headquartered in Torre MAPFRE on Paseo de la Reforma in Mexico City. It suits travellers flying within Mexico, between Mexico and the United States or Canada, and between Latin America and Europe or East Asia with one stop in Mexico City.

From Aeronaves de México to privatisation

Aeroméxico started in 1934 as Aeronaves de México. The Mexican government nationalised it in 1959, the company took the Aeroméxico name in 1972, and it returned to private hands in 1988 as Aerovías de México, the legal name it still uses. In 2000 it joined Delta Air Lines, Air France and Korean Air in founding the SkyTeam alliance. Delta holds a minority stake of about 20%.

Mexico City hub and secondary bases

Mexico City International Airport (MEX) is the main hub, and most long-haul flights leave from there. Guadalajara (GDL) and Monterrey (MTY) work as secondary hubs, mainly for domestic flights and routes to the United States. The airline lists more than 120 destinations. Long-haul flights reach Madrid, Barcelona, Paris, London, Amsterdam and Rome in Europe and Tokyo Narita and Seoul Incheon in Asia, while South American routes serve Bogotá, Lima, Santiago, Buenos Aires and São Paulo. Shorter regional flights are flown by the subsidiary Aeroméxico Connect, which started life as Aerolitoral.

Partnership with Delta

Aeroméxico and Delta run a joint cooperation agreement on flights between the United States and Mexico, in force since 8 May 2017. For travellers this means coordinated schedules, shared flight numbers and one ticket that combines a Delta flight to a US gateway with an Aeroméxico flight onward into Mexico. Miles can be earned on either airline.

Baggage allowance

On Aeroméxico, the bag allowance follows your fare type, cabin and route, and the exact figure is printed on your AM e-ticket.

Aeroméxico ties the allowance to the fare brand you buy, and the cheapest economy brand comes with the least. Flights to and from the United States can follow different rules from domestic Mexican flights. Check Manage Booking on aeromexico.com for the exact figure on your ticket.

Aeroméxico sets the cabin bag and checked bag allowance by fare brand and route, and the lowest economy fares carry the smallest allowance. Your e-ticket and the Manage Booking page show what you have. Passengers arriving in Mexico City from abroad and connecting to a domestic flight clear Mexican immigration and customs at MEX, collect their bags and drop them again, so book a connection with generous time. Online check-in runs on aeromexico.com and the Aeroméxico app.

Pro tip: if you connect in Mexico City after an international flight, you collect your bags for customs and drop them again for the domestic leg, so keep the tags and allow time for the second drop.

Online Check-in

Aeroméxico check-in comes down to four steps, from checking in online to dropping your bags at Mexico City International.

  1. Step 1

  3. Step 3

    Arrive early

Each airport has its own Aeroméxico check-in and bag-drop deadline, listed in your booking. Allow extra time for busy terminals and international AM departures.

Cheap tickets

A few booking habits that tend to cut the cost of flying Aeroméxico.

  1. 01

    Try midweek AM flights

If your dates can move, look at AM flights across the whole week. Midweek seats are often cheaper than weekend ones.

    Midweek flights
  2. 02

    Travel around the busy dates

When school holidays and festivals send many people travelling at once, AM fares rise. A trip just before or after the peak tends to cost less.

    School holidays · festivals
  3. 03

Price the bundle, not the base fare

The lowest AM fare is not always the cheapest trip once bags and seats are added. Compare the fare types before you pay.

  4. 04

    Connect through Mexico City

Many routes between the US and Latin America connect in Mexico City. Compare the one-stop fare with other options.
