Incheon is easy to use once you know which terminal you need. This guide covers both terminals and the Concourse, the AREX and bus options into Seoul, and where to rest on a long connection.
Please note: Flights, hotels near the airport and car hire with driver on this page can be booked directly on bookingMentor. We list places on merit, and bookings never affect what we say about them.
Incheon International Airport (ICN) is South Korea's main international gateway, built on reclaimed land on Yeongjong Island off the coast of Incheon, roughly 50 km west of central Seoul. It opened in March 2001 and took over almost all of Seoul's international flights from Gimpo, which still handles most domestic services and a handful of short regional routes.
There are two passenger terminals about 15 km apart by road. Terminal 2, opened in 2018, serves Korean Air, Asiana, Jin Air and their SkyTeam partners such as Delta, Air France and KLM. Terminal 1 takes nearly everyone else, and its midfield Concourse is reached airside by a shuttle train. The Airport Railroad (AREX) stops at both terminals and runs straight into Seoul Station, and limousine buses fan out to hotels and districts across the capital.
Incheon is built for long connections. Transit passengers on through-checked tickets can stay airside without a Korean visa, use a free transit lounge with showers, book the transit hotel or a capsule room, or sign up for a free Korea Transit Tour from the arrivals hall. Landside, the basement Spa on Air sauna is a popular overnight option for arrivals who land after the trains stop.
Work on Incheon began in November 1992 on reclaimed land between Yeongjong and Yongyu islands. The Asian financial crisis pushed completion back from the original 1997 target, and the airport opened in March 2001 with capacity for 30 million passengers a year. Each later phase added room. The second, finished on 20 June 2008, brought a third runway and the Concourse linked by people mover. The third, built between 2011 and 2017, added Terminal 2, which opened on 18 January 2018 to a design by Gensler. The fourth phase, completed on 3 December 2024, expanded Terminal 2 and added more apron space.
There are now four runways: three of 3,750 m and one of 4,000 m. The fourth opened on 17 June 2017. In 2024 Incheon handled 71,156,947 passengers and 413,200 aircraft movements, which placed it 13th in the world for passengers and sixth for cargo, with almost 2.95 million tonnes moved. The airport is 48 km west of Seoul.
If you land after the last train, the airport runs late-night buses into Seoul, and its website lists the routes and times. If you would rather wait for the morning trains, the landside seating and the basement Spa on Air sauna make an overnight wait manageable.
Landside at Incheon means the public areas: the 3F departures hall, the 1F arrivals hall with the bus and taxi stops, the Transportation Center and the B1 level with the AREX station, Spa on Air and food courts. Airside starts after security and passport control on 3F and covers the gates, the duty-free area, the transit lounges and, in Terminal 1, the Concourse reached by shuttle train.

Seoul tap water is treated and safe, but most travellers drink bottled or filtered water. Drinking-water fountains are available airside; bring an empty bottle through security.
Free showers are available in the airside transit lounge (bring or buy a towel). Landside, Spa on Air has showers and baths, and the airline and paid lounges have their own.
Power outlets and USB ports are fitted at most gates and in the rest areas. Korea uses type C and F sockets at 220 V, the same two-pin plugs as most of Europe.
Baggage storage counters operate in the arrivals halls of both terminals. Prices depend on size and time, so ask at the counter. There is no storage airside.
| Bag size | Per day | Extra days |
|---|---|---|
| Standard suitcase, arrivals hall counter | Priced by size | Ask at counter |
| Coats (winter coat storage service) | Priced by stay | Ask at counter |
Free WiFi covers both terminals and the Concourse. For mobile data, the telecom counters in the 1F arrivals hall sell tourist SIMs and eSIMs and rent pocket WiFi routers; bring your passport.
The cheapest meals are landside in the food courts on B1 and 1F. Airside, fast food sits on the departures level and the better Korean restaurants are on 4F.
Search for what you need: try "sim", "money", "pray", "bag" or "tour".
Nothing matches that search. Try "sim", "wifi", "bag" or "food".
The terminals never close. Most shops and many restaurants close between about 21:00 and 07:00, while convenience stores and some cafés stay open. The AREX runs from about 05:20 to midnight, and limousine buses stop shortly after the last scheduled arrivals.
The order of things at Incheon, from the aircraft door to the kerb and back.
If you land at a Concourse gate in Terminal 1, follow the signs to the shuttle train, which takes you to the main building for immigration.
Queues are usually short by international standards. Have your passport and any arrival documents ready.
Find your belt on the screens and leave through customs into the 1F arrivals hall.
Buy a T-money card at a convenience store, pick up a SIM or rental router at the telecom counters, and use the ATMs if you need cash.
Go down to B1 for the AREX, or out to the 1F kerb for limousine buses and taxis. Bus ticket counters are inside the arrivals hall.
Three hours before an international flight. Confirm your terminal first; a wrong-terminal mistake costs about 20 minutes on the shuttle bus.
Find your airline row on the screens. Many airlines also offer self-service kiosks and bag drops.
Most foreign passport holders use staffed counters; eligible travellers can register for automated gates.
If you bought duty-free online or in the city, collect it at the pick-up desk airside, and allow time for the queue.
For Terminal 1 gates numbered 101 and above, take the shuttle train to the Concourse. Be at the gate 40 minutes before departure.
Incheon sits on Yeongjong Island, linked to the mainland by the Yeongjong and Incheon bridges. The AREX is the simplest way into Seoul by day; limousine buses suit hotels away from the rail line, and taxis are the fallback after midnight. The AREX Express non-stop train is the quickest way to Seoul Station. Working from the AREX timetable, a weekday express takes about 43 minutes from Terminal 1 and about 51 minutes from Terminal 2, and the airport says it runs from about 06:10 to 22:50, every 30 to 40 minutes. AREX also runs an all-stop train between the airport and Seoul Station, bought from ticket machines and boarded on the same platforms; it is slower and stops along the way. The airport also publishes a separate guide to connecting with Gimpo Airport. Both trains call at both terminals, so check which station your airline uses before travelling to the airport. The two terminals are far apart, and a mistake costs time.
Pre-book a car with a driver on bookingMentor before you land. Your driver meets you in the arrivals hall, the price is agreed in advance, and you skip the queues. Useful for late arrivals, families with luggage and trips straight to Gangnam or beyond Seoul.
Book car hire on bookingMentorNon-stop to Seoul Station with reserved seating and luggage space. Buy tickets at the AREX counters on B1; the express accepts foreign credit cards. It does not stop at Gimpo.

Free buses link Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 landside, roughly every 10 minutes. The AREX also links the two stations for ₩1,050.
An underground train links the main Terminal 1 building with the midfield Concourse. Allow extra time if your gate is there.
