What to expect

Air Europa (IATA: UX, ICAO: AEA) is Spain's third-largest airline, after Iberia and Vueling, and is headquartered in Llucmajor on Mallorca. From its hub at Adolfo Suárez Madrid–Barajas it flies to more than 44 destinations in Spain, Europe, North Africa, the Caribbean and the Americas, and it suits travellers flying between Spain and Latin America on Boeing 787s.

From Air España in 1986 to Air Europa

The airline started in 1986 as Air España, part of the British ILG-Air Europe group, with Spanish banks holding 75% of the shares at first. It is now owned by Globalia Corporación Empresarial, a Spanish travel group.

Failed takeover and new investors

International Airlines Group (IAG), which owns Iberia, held a 20% stake from 2022 and agreed in 2023 to buy 80% of Air Europa for €400 million. IAG dropped the deal in August 2024 after the European Commission's competition review demanded remedies the group would not accept. In 2025 Air France-KLM and Lufthansa withdrew from talks over a minority stake, leaving Turkish Airlines as the only known remaining bidder.

Madrid hub and Latin American long-haul routes

Madrid is the hub for nearly every long-haul flight, and Palma de Mallorca and Tenerife North are focus cities. The long-haul network concentrates on Latin America and the Caribbean, with routes to cities across South America, Central America and the Caribbean islands, plus flights to the United States. Short-haul flights link Madrid with Spanish cities, the Balearic and Canary Islands, Europe, Morocco and Tunisia. A new route from Madrid to San Salvador in El Salvador was scheduled to launch on 17 December 2026.

SUMA

Air Europa’s loyalty programme. Join SUMA online before you fly so the trip counts.

SUMA members earn miles on Air Europa flights and with SkyTeam partners and redeem them for award flights and upgrades.

Air Europa joined SkyTeam in September 2007. Its loyalty programme, SUMA, lets members earn and redeem miles on Air Europa and on SkyTeam partners such as Air France, KLM, Delta, Aeroméxico and Aerolíneas Argentinas, which is useful for travellers who combine a Madrid long-haul flight with connections in the Americas or Europe.

Baggage allowance

Air Europa does not give every passenger the same allowance: the route, the cabin and the fare you buy each change it. Your UX e-ticket shows what you have.

Air Europa's allowance depends on the fare family and the route, and long-haul flights to the Americas carry a different allowance from short-haul European flights. Your booking on aireuropa.com shows the figure.

Pro tip: if your trip combines Air Europa with another SkyTeam airline on one ticket, check the allowance for each flight in the booking.
