What to expect

Vueling (IATA VY) is a Spanish low-cost airline headquartered in Viladecans near Barcelona and part of International Airlines Group (IAG), with British Airways, Iberia and Aer Lingus. From its main base at Barcelona El Prat and bases across Spain, Italy, France, the Netherlands and the UK it flies to around 100 destinations, mostly in Europe and North Africa. It suits travellers heading to or from Spain on short flights.

Barcelona start-up to IAG airline

Vueling was founded on 10 February 2004 and flew its first service, Barcelona to Ibiza, on 1 July 2004 with two Airbus A320s. The name blends the Spanish "vuelo", flight, with the English "-ing". Barbara Cassani became chairman in 2007.

In July 2009 Vueling merged with its Barcelona rival Clickair, and the combined business carried 8.2 million passengers that year. The Rome Fiumicino base opened on 25 March 2012. On 23 April 2013 IAG took control, and Vueling now runs as a standalone company inside the group, which owns 97.52 per cent.

Barcelona base and bases outside Spain

Barcelona El Prat is the main base, Rome Fiumicino the second, and Paris Orly, Amsterdam Schiphol and London Gatwick add bases outside Spain and Italy. Spanish bases include Alicante, Bilbao, Gran Canaria, Ibiza, Málaga, Palma de Mallorca, Santiago de Compostela, Seville, Tenerife North and Valencia, plus Florence in Italy. Bases in Brussels, Catania and Palermo closed in 2016.

Most routes link Spain with the rest of Europe, with flights to Morocco and other nearby countries. Vueling codeshares with Aer Lingus, British Airways, Iberia, Level, LATAM Brasil, Qatar Airways and TUI Airways, which lets a Vueling flight connect to an Iberia or Qatar long-haul on one ticket.

Size and results

Vueling carried more than 34 million passengers in 2019 and about 38 million in both 2024 and 2025. In 2025 it reported revenue of 3.23 billion euros and net profit of 234 million euros. Carolina Martinoli is chair and chief executive.

The move to Boeing

Vueling has flown Airbus A320 family jets since day one. In July 2025 IAG confirmed 50 Boeing 737 MAX jets for Vueling, 25 MAX 200s and 25 MAX 10s, with deliveries from 2026, so the airline will run two aircraft families for some years.

Booking early for island summer flights

Summer flights to the Balearic and Canary Islands fill early, as load factors are high, so book well ahead for July and August. Vueling Club members earn Avios, which can also be used with British Airways and Iberia.
