Al Ruwais
Al Ruwais travel guide
A quiet harbour town at the northern tip of Qatar.
Al Ruwais is a small fishing port on Qatar's northern tip, about 127 km from Doha. Come for empty beaches, birdwatching, the Al Shamal Corniche and day trips to the UNESCO-listed Al Zubarah Archaeological Site and Fuwairit beach. Visit from November to March and allow 1 to 2 days. Prices are high, and many nationalities enter visa-free, with others applying through Hayya.
Al Ruwais is a small port town on the northern tip of Qatar, in Al Shamal municipality, about 127 km north of Doha. Its harbour is one of the country's traditional ports, and the area is known for quiet beaches, birdwatching, the Al Shamal Corniche and views across to the northernmost point of Qatar at Ras Rakan.
The town makes a peaceful base for exploring the north, including the UNESCO-listed Al Zubarah Archaeological Site, a former pearling and trading town, the restored Zubarah Fort and the coast at Fuwairit, where turtles nest in season.

Money and costs
Riyals and cards
Al Ruwais is a cheap stop, since there is little to buy beyond kebabs, fuel and a boat crossing to Ras Rakan. Cards and contactless payments work almost everywhere in Qatar, but carry some riyals for the harbour and small shops.
- Tipping around 10% is common in restaurants.
Health and vaccines
Heat
Al Ruwais is cooler than Doha but still hot from May to September, and the corniche and Ras Rakan have little shade. Carry water and sun protection. Healthcare in Qatar is excellent, though Doha's hospitals are about 110 km away, so buy insurance.
- Tap water
- Desalinated and safe
Staying safe
Very safe, strict laws
Crime in Al Ruwais is very low, and the town is quiet and traditional. Qatar's laws on alcohol, drugs and public behaviour are strict, the boat trip to Ras Rakan depends on weather and tide, and the emergency number is 999.
- Emergency
- 999
Where to stay
Resorts and day trips
Al Ruwais itself has few beds, but the north has a handful of resorts and wellness retreats, including the Fuwairit area on the east coast. Many visitors come on a day trip from Doha, but a night lets you walk the corniche at dusk.
- Base
- Northern resorts or Doha
Getting around
Car needed
A car is essential to combine Al Ruwais with Zubarah, Fuwairit and the empty north coast. In town, the corniche and harbour are walkable, and Mowasalat routes from Doha's Al Ghanim station serve the town for travellers without wheels, though services are infrequent.
- Al Zubarah
- About 28 km southwest
- Fuwairit
- About 25 km southeast
- Al Ruwais is just over 110 km from Doha on the Al Shamal Road, about 1 hour 20 minutes by car.
- Bus 101 runs direct in about 2 hours; bus 100 goes via Zubarah in about 2½.
- The first bus north leaves Doha at 06:20 and the last one back at 20:35; confirm with Mowasalat first.
SIM and internet
Ooredoo, Vodafone
Buy an Ooredoo or Vodafone tourist SIM at Hamad International Airport with your passport before driving north to Al Ruwais. Coverage reaches the town, but download offline maps for the long loop through Zubarah and along the empty north-west coast.

- Ooredoo, Vodafone Qatar
Culture and etiquette
Conservative dress
Life in Al Ruwais is small-town and traditional. Qatar expects modest dress in public, so cover shoulders and knees, and non-Muslims should admire the old mosque from outside. Ask before photographing local people, and keep to marked areas around the turtle beaches.
- Cover shoulders and knees in public
- Drinking alcohol outside licensed hotel venues
- Photographing people without permission

Doha weather by month
The table uses Doha's figures, about 23°C in January and 42°C in June and July; Al Ruwais itself runs a few degrees cooler in summer, with August averaging 37.1°C.
Climate figures are approximate long-term averages for Doha, the nearest long-term weather station (Qatar Meteorology Department 1992–2021 normals, via Wikipedia).
A night in Al Ruwais with the corniche, Ras Rakan and the harbour
Give Al Ruwais a night, not just the hour most visitors spend on the Al Shamal loop. Walk the Al Shamal Corniche, opened in May 2018, in the evening cool, and time the boat crossing to Ras Rakan, the islet about 2.4 km off the tip of the peninsula, for the morning. The harbour completes the picture.
The name means "small head", for the way the town juts into the sea. Begin at Al Ruwais Mosque, thought to be the oldest surviving mosque in Qatar: first built around the 17th century and rebuilt in the 1940s, it holds about 100 worshippers. The 1955 police station now serves as a museum of finds from Ruwayda, an abandoned village that ranks among the country's largest archaeological sites.
Then the shore. The Al Shamal Corniche, opened in May 2018, runs for 2,570 m. A dugong sculpture joined it on the beach in 2022. Ruwais Beach, also called Abu Dhalouf, sits on a spit just north of town, with coves, shaded benches and toilets.
Ras Rakan, the islet at the very tip of the peninsula, lies about 2.4 km offshore and 4 km northwest of town. Its channel is too shallow for boats. People cross by wading at low water, so check tide times before setting out and turn back well before the sea rises.
Why the northern tip of Qatar runs cooler than Doha
Al Ruwais runs a little cooler than Doha at the tip of the peninsula: its annual mean daily maximum is 29.5°C, and even August, the hottest month, averages 37.1°C. Rainfall averages 83.9 mm a year, mostly in winter. November to March is the best window, and Ras Rakan is a hawksbill turtle nesting site.
Even August, the hottest month, peaks at an average of 37.1°C, several degrees below the capital's 41°C and 42°C in high summer.
Winters are wetter too. That is more rain than the capital receives.
The cooler northern summer does mean, though, that an early walk on the corniche or an evening on the beach stays bearable later into spring than it would in Doha.
Wildlife adds its own calendar. Ras Rakan is one of Qatar's main hawksbill turtle nesting sites, so during the nesting season keep away from marked nests and respect any closures. Dugongs and flamingos are occasionally seen from Ruwais Beach, and roughly 13 hectares of mangroves line this stretch of coast, and the town is a known birdwatching spot.
Fatayer, shawarma and the few places to eat in Al Ruwais
Eating out in Al Ruwais is simple because there is little choice. Iskendar Kebab, on the road towards the beach, is known for fatayer and shawarma; otherwise bring supplies from Doha or Al Khor or eat at your resort. The sea still supplies the best meal, from the fishing harbour.
Before oil, this was one of the peninsula's most important fishing centres. On Ruwais Beach visitors catch shrimp and crabs in the shallows at high tide; a small net and a bucket are all you need.
Life here is small-town and traditional. Non-Muslims should admire the old mosque from outside unless invited in, and everyone should dress modestly on the corniche. Ask before photographing people, especially women.
In the heat of the day the town's two libraries make quiet refuges. The Ali Abdullah Al Fayedh library, opened in 2017, holds more than 21,000 Arabic books, and the Ali Bin Hussein Al-Sada library, opened in May 2021, specialises in Islamic literature.
