Art Basel guide
Art Basel fills Messe Basel with around 280 galleries each June, and the 2027 edition runs from 17 to 20 June. Public days give anyone with a ticket the same works collectors saw at preview, plus Unlimited's large installations and the free Parcours route through the old town. Book a room early; the city fills fast.
Art Basel is the June art fair that turns a mid-sized Swiss city on the Rhine into the commercial centre of the art world for a week. Around 280 galleries from across the globe take stands inside Messe Basel, showing everything from early twentieth-century modernism to work finished a few months before the doors open. The 2027 edition runs from 17 to 20 June.
The fair began in 1970, when Basel gallerists Ernst Beyeler, Trudl Bruckner and Balz Hilt set it up, and it has since grown into a brand with sister fairs in Miami Beach, Hong Kong and Paris. Basel is still the original and, for most dealers, the most important. Collectors and museum curators arrive for the preview days early in the week; the public days follow, and anyone with a ticket can walk the same aisles.
For visitors who are not buying, the draw is Unlimited, a separate hall given over to installations, films and sculpture too large for a normal stand, and Parcours, which places works in streets, churches and courtyards around the old town. Fondation Beyeler in Riehen and the Kunstmuseum Basel schedule some of their strongest exhibitions for the same weeks, so a two- or three-day stay is easy to fill. More on travelling in the country is in our Switzerland guide.

Hotels near the venue fill up around the event dates.
The main fair is spread over two floors and is larger than it looks from the square. Most visitors find a full day only just enough:
Wear comfortable shoes. The floors are hard, and the walking adds up quickly.
Basel hotels normally give guests a Basel Card or mobility ticket for free tram and bus travel during their stay, which covers the trip to Messeplatz. Ask at check-in.
Taxis are scarce and slow around the Messe at closing time; the tram is faster.
Unlimited is quietest early in the day.
Work through the gallery floors before the afternoon crowd.
Cross into the old town for the free site-specific works, or visit Liste.
Several museums extend hours during fair week; locals swim in the Rhine on warm evenings.
The dates are fixed, 17 to 20 June 2027, so the first thing to secure is a room. Basel is a small city and a large part of its hotel stock is taken by galleries and collectors months in advance. Many visitors stay in Zurich, roughly an hour away by train, or across the border in Germany or France, where Basel's tram network reaches.
Buy fair tickets through artbasel.com once sales open. One public day covers the main halls; a second day lets you add Unlimited properly, the satellite fairs and a museum or two. Thursday and Friday are usually calmer than the weekend.
When Ernst Beyeler, Trudl Bruckner and Balz Hilt opened the first fair in 1970, it was a modest regional idea: bring dealers to a city on the meeting point of Switzerland, France and Germany, where collectors from all three could reach it by car or train. It worked quickly, and within a few years galleries from New York and London were applying for stands.
Unlimited arrived in 2000 to cope with works that would not fit in a booth. Two years later the organisers launched the Miami Beach fair, followed by Hong Kong in 2013 and Paris in 2022. Through all of it Basel has kept its June slot and its reputation as the edition where the most important works are offered.
EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg lies just over the French border; bus 50 runs to Basel SBB station.
Basel SBB has direct services from Zurich, Bern and Geneva, and Basel Badischer Bahnhof links to German ICE routes.
Trams stop on Messeplatz; hotel guests normally receive free local transport for their stay.
Kleinbasel, around the Messe, puts the fair within walking distance and goes first.
Grossbasel's old town is a short tram ride away. Many visitors stay in Zurich, or across the border in Germany or France, when Basel hotels are full.
Basel in June is usually warm, with average highs of about 24°C and lows of about 13°C (1991-2020 normals), and occasional thunderstorms.
The halls are air-conditioned; carry a light layer for evenings by the Rhine.

Timing & weather
From 17 to 20 June 2027, according to Art Basel's official site. Those are the dates open to the public; invited guests usually see the fair on preview days earlier in the same week.
Booking
Anyone can buy a day ticket for the public days. The preview days are by invitation, mostly for collectors, museum staff and press, but the works on show are the same.
Parcours places site-specific works in public spaces around Basel, usually in and around the old town. It has traditionally been free and open to everyone, so it is a good way to see part of the programme without entering the halls.
General
Unlimited is the sector for oversized pieces: room-filling installations, long video works, large sculpture and performance. It has its own hall at Messe Basel and is included in a standard fair ticket.
Three Basel gallerists, Ernst Beyeler, Trudl Bruckner and Balz Hilt, launched the fair in 1970. Beyeler later opened the Fondation Beyeler museum in nearby Riehen.
Miami Beach every December, Hong Kong in spring, and Paris in October. Each has its own gallery list; Basel is the oldest and largest of the four.
Yes. Art Basel is a commercial fair, and gallery staff on each stand can give prices and availability. Much of the major business is done during the preview days, so some works carry a sold mark by the time the public arrives.
The Basel architects Herzog & de Meuron designed the newer Messe Basel hall, finished in 2013, with its open-air courtyard known as the City Lounge under a circular opening in the roof.
Yes. Several satellite fairs, most notably Liste for younger galleries, run in the city during the same week. Each sells its own tickets.
Very much so. The Kunstmuseum Basel, Fondation Beyeler and Museum Tinguely often time major shows to coincide with Art Basel, but they are also at their busiest, so book timed entry where offered.
Families & accessibility
Children are welcome on public days. Unlimited, with its large installations and films, usually holds their attention better than the gallery booths, and the halls are step-free for buggies.
