Bandarban Hills is a three-day journey into the remote south of the Chittagong Hill Tracts, travelling by jeep and river boat up the Sangu to the Nafakhum waterfall, where water drops over a broad rock ledge in deep forest. It suits fit travellers who are comfortable with long road days, boat rides and wading through water over rock.

Day 1
Arrival in Bandarban and Nilachal
Meet the guide at the Bandarban bus stand at 10:00 (overnight buses from Dhaka and buses from Chattogram arrive in the morning). After lunch and check-in the guide collects copies of everyone's ID for the Thanchi permits. Late afternoon drive to Nilachal, about 6 km from town, for the view over the Sangu valley at sunset. Dinner and an early night; the jeep leaves at 06:00.

Day 2
Thanchi, the Sangu river and Nafakhum
The chander gari jeep climbs the hill road past Chimbuk and Nilgiri to Thanchi, about 79 km and three hours. The party registers at the Thanchi police station and the BGB camp, then boards an engine boat up the Sangu to Remakri, around two and a half hours depending on the water. After lunch at Remakri the guide leads the walk along the Remakri stream to Nafakhum, mostly over rock and through knee-deep water, and back before dark. If the boat runs late the walk moves to the morning of day three.

Day 3
Down the Sangu and back to Bandarban
Breakfast in Remakri and the boat back downstream to Thanchi, which is quicker than the trip up. The jeep returns to Bandarban by about 15:00, with a lunch stop on the way. The tour ends at the Bandarban bus stand, in time for the afternoon buses to Chattogram and the night buses to Dhaka.

Children & extra bed policy
Children under 2 travel free sharing the parents' bed, with no seat on the vehicle. A child aged 2 to 11 sharing a bed with two adults pays 75% of the adult price; with a separate bed, 85%. Guests from 12 years old pay the adult price. One child per room can share a bed.

Booking and confirmation
Send a clear copy of your NID or passport with the booking. The permits at Thanchi are issued against the names on the list, and a guest whose ID was not sent in advance can be turned back at the checkpoint.
Payment schedule
A deposit of 25% of the package price confirms the seats. The balance is due 30 days before departure; bookings made inside 30 days are paid in full at the time of booking. Card payments (Visa, Mastercard, Amex), Nexus and bKash are accepted.
Cancellation and refunds
Full refund over 45 days out, 50% retained down to 21 days, non-refundable inside that.
Cancel 45 days or more before departure and the full amount paid is refunded. Between 44 and 21 days before departure, 50% of the package price is refunded. Inside 21 days, or a no-show on the day, no refund is due. If the operator cancels a departure for low numbers or a closure order, you choose between another date and a full refund.
Visa & documents
Guests who do not hold a Bangladeshi passport need a valid Bangladesh visa before travel. Apply at least 21 days before departure; the desk can issue a booking confirmation and itinerary letter for the application but does not file the visa itself.

The departure runs with at least 6 guests.
On tour
Meet the escort at the pickup point at least 30 minutes before the listed start time. Carry a photo ID (passport for foreign guests) on every day of the tour, as police and forest checkpoints ask for it. Timings are approximate and move with traffic, weather and local permits.

You should be comfortable walking two to three hours each way over wet rock and through knee-deep stream water, and sitting through long jeep rides on hill roads. No climbing gear is needed, but this is not a trip for guests with knee or back problems.
Foreign nationals face stricter rules in the Chittagong Hill Tracts: UK government advice says they must give the Bangladesh authorities 10 days' notice, and travel beyond Thanchi is often not allowed for them. The desk checks the current position before accepting a booking and refunds the deposit if permission is refused.
Quick-dry clothes, shoes or sandals with a good grip that can get wet, a light jacket for the early jeep ride in winter, a torch, a power bank, insect repellent and a dry bag for your phone.
One life jacket per guest is supplied on the engine boat and should be worn during the river trip. Extra jackets for children or spare ones are not included.
November to February. The river is low enough for the stream walk to Nafakhum and the weather is dry. In the monsoon the walk becomes unsafe and the route is usually closed.
The Remakri stream drops about 25 to 30 feet at Nafakhum, over a wide rock shelf.
Visa & documents
Travel beyond Thanchi needs permission from the local administration, and the police and BGB check names against a list. The operator files the list with your ID details before the departure date.
Timing & weather
Access depends on local permission and the river level. If the route is closed, the trip is rerouted to Boga Lake in Ruma with the same number of nights, or you can take a full refund.

Simple wooden or bamboo guest houses with shared rooms, mattresses on the floor or basic beds, and shared toilets. Electricity comes from solar panels for a few hours in the evening, and there is no hot water.

Getting there
Coverage is reasonable in Bandarban town and patchy up to Thanchi. From Thanchi to Remakri there is little or no signal, so tell family you will be out of reach for about a day.
