What to expect

Binter Canarias, marketed as Binter, is the regional airline and flag carrier of the Canary Islands in Spain, with hubs at Gran Canaria Airport and Tenerife North Airport. It suits travellers hopping between the islands, residents flying to mainland Spain, and visitors heading on to Madeira, the Azores, Morocco or West Africa. Founded on 18 February 1988 as a subsidiary of Iberia, it made its first flight on 26 March 1989.

Inter-island flights first

Binter's core business is the short hop between the islands. It serves all eight main Canary Island airports, with most routes running through Gran Canaria or Tenerife North. Binter's Tenerife base is Tenerife North, in San Cristóbal de La Laguna, so check which Tenerife airport your other flights use before booking a connection.

Beyond the archipelago

In August 2024 the network listed 38 destinations. On the Spanish mainland and the Balearics Binter flies to cities including Madrid, A Coruña, Asturias, Granada, Santander, Vigo, Zaragoza, Palma de Mallorca and Menorca. Portuguese points are Funchal on Madeira, Porto Santo and Ponta Delgada in the Azores.

Africa is the other growth area. Binter flies to Agadir, Fez and Guelmim in Morocco, Laayoune and Dakhla in Western Sahara, Dakar in Senegal and Sal in Cape Verde. Several routes have ended, among them Lille, Marseille, Toulouse, Florence, Venice, Banjul, Ibiza, Jerez and Marrakesh, so check the current schedule before you plan around a destination.

Ownership and the companies behind the flights

Iberia's state holding company SEPI privatised Binter in late 1999, and Hesperia Inversiones Aéreas bought the airline in July 2002. The largest shareholder today is Ilsamar Tenerife with 49.81 percent, and the rest is held by other Canary Island companies. Pedro Agustín del Castillo Machado is chief executive.

Several sister companies run parts of the operation. Atlántica Handling has handled ground services since 2005, and BinterTechnic has carried out maintenance since January 2008. Binter absorbed the regional operator NAYSA in spring 2018, launched Naysa Servicios Aéreos in June 2023 and sold its 70 percent stake in a Cape Verde affiliate to BestFly Worldwide in 2021.

Partners and BinterMás

Binter is not in a global alliance. It codeshares with Iberia and Azores Airlines, which helps on journeys that continue from Madrid or Ponta Delgada, and has interline agreements with APG Airlines and Hahn Air. The loyalty programme is BinterMás, which rewards frequent flyers on Binter routes.

Baggage allowance

Check your e-ticket for the exact Binter allowance. It is set by the fare type, the cabin and the route, whether you start at LPA or another airport.

Cabin bag only

A long-haul Binter trip and a short hop can come with different allowances, and every cabin above the lowest economy fare gets more. The baggage page on bintercanarias.com shows the rule for your route.

Residents of the Canary Islands may qualify for a resident discount on many routes. It requires proof of residence at booking and at the airport, and the check can delay boarding if documents are missing. Visitors pay the standard fare. Baggage allowance depends on the fare, and turboprop flights can have different cabin bag limits from jet flights, so check your allowance on bintercanarias.com before you pack.

Pro tip: measure your cabin bag against the Binter size limit before you pack, and add any extra checked weight in your booking, where it usually costs less than at the airport.

Online Check-in

Here is the order to follow for an NT flight: check in, sort your documents, meet the airport deadline and drop your bags.

  1. Step 1

    Check in online

    Passport · visa · ID
  3. Step 3

    Arrive early

Binter closes its check-in counters before departure, and passengers who miss the cut-off can be refused boarding. Leave room for bag drop and security at LPA.

    Check your deadline
  4. Step 4

    Drop your bags

Binter desks and bag-drop points take your hold luggage. Keep the bag-tag receipt with your boarding pass until the bags come off at the end of your NT trip.
