Walk through two wings of European painting.
The Bordeaux Museum of Fine Arts, or MusBA, founded in 1801, shows European painting from the 15th to 20th centuries in two wings beside the Palais Rohan, the city hall. A ticket covering collections and the Galerie costs €8, or €6 for the collections only, with free first Sundays. It opens 11:00 to 18:00 and closes on Tuesdays. Ninety minutes covers the paintings.
The Musée des Beaux-Arts de Bordeaux, known as MusBA, is the fine arts museum of Bordeaux, at 20 cours d'Albret beside the Palais Rohan, the city hall, about 400 metres from the cathedral. It shows European painting from the 15th to the 20th centuries, from Rubens and Titian to Delacroix, Marquet and Picasso. It suits art lovers in Bordeaux with 90 minutes to spare.
The painter Pierre Lacour founded it in 1801, which makes it one of the oldest museums in France. The collection was first kept in a library and then in a room of the town hall. Between 1875 and 1881 it moved into two wings built in the gardens of the Palais Rohan. A separate building across the road, the Galerie des Beaux-Arts on Place du Colonel Raynal, was added between 1936 and 1939 and now hosts temporary exhibitions.
The collection is strongest in French, Flemish and Dutch painting. Rubens's Martyrdom of Saint George, seized during the Revolution, hangs here, and Titian is also represented. Delacroix's Greece on the Ruins of Missolonghi is the best-known painting in the museum. Pierre Lacour's view of the Bordeaux quays, painted in 1804, shows the port as the founder knew it.
Later works include Eugène Boudin's Low Tide at Étaples, Odilon Redon's The Chariot of Apollo (1909), Picasso's Olga Reading, Matisse's Portrait of Bevilacqua and a portrait of a young girl by Mary Cassatt from 1879. Albert Marquet has a strong presence. In 2026 the museum marks anniversaries of its collection with special displays, and until 29 November 2026 the Galerie des Beaux-Arts shows Jean Dupas & Co., an exhibition on Art Deco.
