A Paris bouillon serving traditional French dishes at very low prices since 1896, at 7 Rue du Faubourg Montmartre. It opens every day from 11:30 to midnight with no reservations, so expect to queue.
Bouillon Chartier Grands Boulevards is a historic Paris bouillon at 7 Rue du Faubourg Montmartre in the 9th arrondissement, serving traditional French dishes at very low prices since 1896. It is open every day of the year from 11:30 to midnight without reservations, and suits budget travellers and anyone who wants a classic Belle Époque dining room.
The menu is long and traditional. Leeks vinaigrette, eggs mayonnaise and snails are typical starters. Boeuf bourguignon, pot-au-feu and roast chicken lead the mains. Desserts come with house-made Chantilly cream. Starters start from about €1, main courses run about €7 to €10, and desserts start from about €2, so a full meal usually costs under €20 per person.
The hall is tall and Belle Époque, with brass coat racks, mirrors and waiters in black waistcoats moving at speed. At busy times tables are shared and the noise level is high. Service is fast, and tables turn quickly.
Grands Boulevards metro station on lines 8 and 9 is a short walk away.
The brothers Frédéric and Camille Chartier opened the restaurant in 1896 as "Le Bouillon", a cheap workers' eatery near the Hôtel Drouot and the Musée Grévin. It has had only four owners since, and its interior has been protected as a monument historique since 1989. Besides the main hall there is a mezzanine where diners are also served, and at the end of the meal the waiter writes the bill straight onto the paper tablecloth. The house motto promises a decent meal at a modest price. Two newer Bouillon Chartier restaurants run on the same model, at Gare de l'Est and at 59 Boulevard du Montparnasse, and are worth knowing if the queue here is too long.
